A heartfelt love story with a very unusual premise.

For the past twenty years, critics have been talking about the death of the romantic comedy, a light-hearted genre that originated in the 1930s and ruled the box office in the 1980s and '90s. In the 2010s, the demand for movies with the "meet cute" and "from enemies to lovers" tropes waned. The main stars of the genre have matured and moved on to more serious cinema.

But the rom-com renaissance is here: last year alone, more than a dozen new rom-com stories were made, the highest-grossing of which was Anyone But You, starring Sydney Sweeney. And recently, news broke of a classic revival – a sequel to Bridget Jones's Diary is in the works.

On April 4, a new rom-com was released on Prime Video, and in just under a week, it earned an impressive 97% for the genre on Rotten Tomatoes, climbing into the platform's top 5 and proving that the genre is rather alive than dead.

What is Música About?

YouTuber and actor Rudy Mancuso made his directorial debut with a semi-autobiographical movie about living with synesthesia, a neurological disorder that causes Mancuso to hear the world around him in a specific rhythm.

Música is an attempt to use cinematic means to show the viewer what it is like to be a person for whom every sound and noise in his head forms a complex melody. However, the subject will not be limited to synesthesia – the main character will have to fall in love with the girl of his dreams and find a balance between his personal life, his career and his desire to return from the US to his native Brazil.

Música Allows the Viewers to Feel the Music of Life

Rudy's gift (or curse) gives the creators the opportunity to turn the movie into a kind of musical without songs. From the first frames, Música impresses with its technical component: the sound of a car engine can enchant with the same power as the chirping of birds.

Rudy tries to explain his feelings to his beloved Isabella, drawing her attention to the smallest details of the park where they spend their time – the sound of a basketball hitting the ground, or the rustle of garbage bags.

The viewer can feel the same as Rudy – a man for whom every footstep or murmur suddenly becomes part of the enchanting soundtrack of everyday life.

Música is a Convincing And Relatable Coming-of-Age Story

First and foremost, Música is a coming-of-age story. Rudy is about to turn in his final work, which he never even started writing, and enter adulthood. He wanders aimlessly around New Jersey, communicating with loved ones and trying to find answers within himself to questions like: what to do next? How do you build a career when you don't like marketing, but you do like music?

Perhaps one out of every two people has faced a quarter-life crisis, which makes Mancuso's thoughts seem painfully familiar.

At first glance, Música looks like a typical rom-com. In many ways, the movie follows in the footsteps of the genre, not allowing itself to experiment. But the brainchild of Rudy Mancuso has a worthy ending that turns out to be much more realistic than you expect.

Música is a kind of personal diary of a young man who shares with the audience the chaos in his head and offers another view of the beauty of the world around him. All of this may be erased from memory with time, but in the moment it captivates with honesty and gives a very warm feeling.
