Two icons, two opposing views on a topic which is becoming more and more controversial with each passing day. And just one question that can tell you which of these two legends' tastes you share.

It's no secret that Quentin Tarantino and Stephen King helped to shape the entertainment as we know it today. While both are known for their revolutionary work, they're equally famous for their unfiltered opinions about cinema that can be quite surprising and controversial.

Tarantino's reputation for having an unconventional taste in films has become almost legendary as his movies. He's made countless headlines for championing critically panned films, including his surprising defense of John Travolta's Battlefield Earth, a film that currently holds only 3% on Rotten Tomatoes.

King also excelled in that aspect. He sent us all into a state of complete confusion when he said that he did not like Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, a movie which has since become a cult classic.

Yet there's something very fundamental that sets these two apart. And that's exactly what you came here for. THE question that'll help you put yourself in the King or Tarantino camp is pretty simple and straightforward.

Do you enjoy watching adaptations or remakes of old, already familiar material?

Stephen King Is Fine With His Books Being Adapted Into a Movie Format

If you're the kind of person who enjoys seeing a fresh take on familiar stories, you might find yourself enjoying Stephen King's company.

King has always been remarkably open-minded about adaptations of his work. Sure, he may not like The Shining, but he has his reasons to. And that doesn't mean he despises all of his remakes. On the contrary, in an interview to Deadline, the master of horror shared his appreciation for particular movie adaptations of his, saying:

“I have a number that I like, but I love The Shawshank Redemption and I’ve always enjoyed working with Frank. He’s a sweet guy. Frank Darabont. And I love the Rob Reiner thing, Stand by Me.”

It's good to have this openness to reinterpretation, as it can lead (and already has led) to some of the most beloved films in the history of cinema ever created. A fresh pair of eyes really can bring a new perspective to an already existing story.

Quentin Tarantino Can’t Stand Remakes or Adaptations of Any Kind

For those who cringe at the mere mention of some remake happening AGAIN, you'll find yourself in the great company of Quentin Tarantino.

His stance on remakes is pretty clear. During an episode of The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, Tarantino didn't hold back, saying:

“People ask, have you seen Dune? Have you seen Ripley? Have you seen Shōgun? And I'm like no, no, no, no. There's six or seven Ripley books. If you do one again. Why are you doing the same one that they've done twice already? I've seen that story twice before, and I didn't really like it in either version. So I'm not really interested in seeing it a third time.”

And honestly, it's easier to get frustrated by remakes because now more than ever they are everywhere. It's rare these days to see an original script come to life rather than seeing another adaptation by a major studio. And to be honest, the original is always much more entertaining than an updated version of a story that you already know.
