This Simple Sweet and Sour Chicken Takes Only 10 Minutes
Cooking chicken pieces in a quick skillet sauce creates a sticky, delicious dinner that tastes just like takeout.
If you want a fast Asian-style meal, this easy sweet and sour chicken is the perfect choice. You just fry the meat until golden and toss it in a rich sauce made from ketchup, soy sauce, and honey.
Ingredients: 1.1 lbs (500g) of chicken breast or thighs, 3 tablespoons of ketchup, 2–3 tablespoons of soy sauce, 3 tablespoons of apple cider or white vinegar (6%), 3 tablespoons of sugar or honey, 3 tablespoons of cornstarch, 1–2 cloves of garlic, 1 tablespoon of fresh or ground ginger, 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, and salt, black pepper, chili flakes, green onions, and sesame seeds to taste.
Pat the chicken dry with a paper towel and cut it into bite-sized pieces. Toss the chicken with a pinch of salt, black pepper, and 1 tablespoon of the cornstarch until every piece has a thin, even coating.
Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over high heat. Add the chicken pieces and fry them for 7 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they turn golden-brown and crispy. Transfer the chicken to a clean plate.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the ketchup, soy sauce, vinegar, sugar or honey, the remaining 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, minced garlic, ginger, and chili flakes until smooth.
Pour this sauce mixture directly into the empty skillet you used for the chicken. Bring it to a boil over low heat, stirring constantly, and let it simmer for about 2 minutes until it turns thick and glossy.
Return the crispy chicken to the skillet and toss everything together thoroughly so each piece is completely coated in the glaze. Heat for another 2 minutes, then serve hot with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and sliced green onions.
