James Gunn wanted to get tough with poor Superdog.

Some things just don’t sit well with audiences — and apparently, punching Krypto the Superdog is one of them. During early test screenings for Superman, a scene where Ultraman throws a punch at the lovable Kryptonian canine caused such an uproar that the filmmakers had no choice but to cut it entirely. Yes, fans really did say, "Oh, hell no!" to Krypto getting roughed up.

Actress Sara Sampaio, who plays Lex Luthor’s assistant and love interest Eve Teschmacher, revealed the behind-the-scenes drama while on the press tour, sharing laughs with her co-star María Gabriela de Faría. When journalist Jake Hamilton mentioned a fan’s fierce reaction to the scene, the two actresses opened up:

"They actually cut a worse scene from [the movie],” Sampaio said. “Me and Nick [Hoult] were a little bit pissed about it, but it's okay. Well, they cut Ultraman punching Krypto because, apparently, it did really bad in the test screening."

De Faría, who plays one of Lex’s henchmen, the Engineer, wasn’t shy either:

"It's not okay. You can't punch a dog. You can't punch, I... Okay. No, I did not punch the dog. The dog attacked me first. And, by the way, I did not kill him or anything. I just wrapped him in a little bubble."

For those who might have missed it, the cut scene was from the official trailer moment where Krypto valiantly tries to defend the Fortress of Solitude from Lex Luthor’s gang. He even manages to land a hit on the Engineer — the very guy dismantling Superman’s robots — but ultimately, Krypto is captured.

Clearly, Krypto is more than just a cute sidekick; he’s a vital character and a vulnerability Lex Luthor hopes to exploit, probably for some sinister experiments. But judging by the test audience’s reaction and the cast’s own feelings, fans won’t stand to see the Superdog take a beating.
