In its cold detachment, this horror movie is reminiscent of the films of Michael Haneke.

In 2014, Goodnight Mommy, a collaboration between Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

This terrifying canvas of childhood fears, straddling the line between reality and fantasy, became one of the most impressive debuts of the 21st century.

What Is 'Goodnight Mommy' About?

Ten-year-old twins Lukas and Elias are eagerly awaiting their mother's return from the hospital in a house on the edge of a cornfield. When she finally arrives, the boys barely recognize her – her face is completely bandaged after surgery, and she seems cold and distant.

The boys are plagued by doubts. Is this woman really their mother, or is someone else hiding under the bandages? They begin their own brutal investigation, trying to find proof.

But the more they investigate, the murkier the situation becomes. It turns out that the mystery lies not so much in their mother as in the boys themselves.

The Production of 'Goodnight Mommy' Is Worthy of Its Own Movie

The creators approached the filming process with incredible meticulousness. Nearly 240 child actors auditioned for the lead roles of the twins before the perfect performers were found.

Susanne Wuest, who played the mother, spent three months in complete solitude and occasionally wrapped her body in bandages to get into character as the mysterious woman.

All scenes were filmed in strict secrecy and in chronological order. The actors received only a small portion of the script each day and did not know how the story would end.

This method produced frighteningly natural reactions from the children, who genuinely didn't understand what was happening throughout filming.

'Goodnight Mommy' Brilliantly Combines Art-House Cinema and Genre Horror

Goodnight Mommy is a uniquely successful blend of arthouse cinema and thriller – it seamlessly builds an atmosphere of chilling horror while addressing deeper issues.

The movie explores topics of abandonment by God, the facelessness of evil, the nature of cruelty, and the subtle dangers of plastic surgery. Most importantly, though, it's a story about how childhood love can turn into its opposite when the fear of losing a loved one develops into something monstrous.

Goodnight Mommy poses these questions and leaves viewers alone with them. It is a cold, merciless, and incredibly stylish debut that proves the most terrifying monsters live within our doubts and fears.
