Disappointment spreads fast.

Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps is shaking up more than just the team’s lineup — it’s redefining one of their oldest foes. Say goodbye to the classic comic book Mole Man and meet Paul Walter Hauser’s Harvey Elder: less "vicious supervillain," more "underground union boss."

In a first look shared by USA Today(via Discussingfilm ), Hauser appears in a grounded version of the character, sporting regular clothes instead of the comic-accurate mole-inspired costume. Director Matt Shakman confirmed the shift, explaining that this Mole Man isn’t here to take over the world — he just wants to be left alone while caring for his subterranean people.

"He’s living sort of in the shadows like a villain would" Hauser said, "but he's also taking care of an entire race of people."

Some fans love the reimagining.

One wrote, "One of the most underrated talents in the industry currently." But others aren’t so sure: "Why ain’t he dressed like a Mole? This IS a superhero movie, isn’t it?" Another shrugged, "He’s just a dude with a jacket."

And as one blunt comment put it: "This was not worth the hype."

Whether Marvel is making bold creative choices or just overcomplicating things — well, that’s up to the fans.
