A huge missed opportunity if you ask fans.

In the first season of Yellowstone, a member of the Dutton family, Lee, was shot and killed while trying to retrieve the cattle stolen from the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. The killer was Kayce's brother-in-law, Robert Long.

It's no secret for fans that Lee was more of a plot device to kickstart Kayce's arc rather than an important and layered character. However, many people to this day feel that Yellowstone could have explored Lee and his story a lot better than it did.

At the very least, they say, it could have made the audience care enough about the character to make his death mean something. But even the "plot device" thing has been executed poorly, some fans argue.

"I get that his character was used as a plot device and it was supposed to "jump start" the show, but the fact the poor dude is actually never mentioned after that and his death didn't make his family seek any form of Godfather like vendetta, makes me wonder what did he die for anyway," Redditor DaisyMiller8 said.

Others, however, argue that viewers were not supposed to care about Lee's death in the first place, which happened for the sake of the show. Still, all the missed angles and storylines were there to be explored, but the showrunners chose to introduce a character whose name some fans don't even remember, only to get rid of him immediately.

Totally Unlikeable Yellowstone Character Fans Can't Help but Support Anyway

Lee was killed in the season one premiere when he tried to recover the stolen cattle and got caught in the crossfire, prompting Kayce to attack and kill his brother-in-law, Robert Long, who was Lee's killer.

Now that Yellowstone is in the middle of its fifth season, fans argue that the show has essentially "run out of story" and would be better off ending after the season finale. However, one of the actors has already confirmed that the show will get at least two more seasons. New episodes of season 5 are expected to premiere this summer.
