Thunderbolts* Box Office and Budget Breakdown: Will It Make a Profit for Marvel?

Marvel’s new superhero flick has had a pretty good opening weekend in theatres, already cementing the status of one of the best MCU movies in years. Here’s how much Thunderbolts* grossed so far — and how much more it needs to actually start bringing Marvel money.
The last weekend might have been the best time for Marvel in years, with the studio now finally seeing its golden age potentially come back with Thunderbolts* ’ raving success.
The movie starring Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour and many more has become nothing short of a major hit three days after arriving in theatres worldwide, paving the way for possibly even more successful Marvel instalments like Fantastic Four: First Steps and the next year’s Avengers: Doomsday.
Still, Thunderbolts* has just started off on its way to bring an actual profit to its home company, though it likely won’t waste much time before doing it anyway.
Thunderbolts*’ Budget and Current Box Office Results, Explained
The movie, which arrived in theatres across the world on May 2, has so far grossed around $162 million, which, according to Variety, is a sum of $86 million from international markets and $76 million from domestic box office.
With its initial budget of $180 million, Thunderbolts* is yet to go for a hunt of at least $250 million more to eventually become profitable for Marvel.
However, just three days after the release, the movie is performing way better than Marvel’s previous film, Captain America: Brave New World, which garnered around $100 million during the same period of time.
What Viewers and Critics Say About Thunderbolts*
With pretty high scores of 88% and 94% from critics and audiences, the movie is rightfully considered Marvel’s comeback from the dead, and both parties’ reviews confirm it like nothing else.
“Thunderbolts* is the best Marvel movie in years, harkening back to the hopeful, emotional stories that made us fall in love with our favorite Marvel characters on the big screen”, Film Joy’s Amanda Mazzillo wrote.
“From beginning to end, Thunderbolts* is not only an undeniably entertaining spectacle, but it’s one of the most heartfelt and deeply emotional films in the entirety of the MCU ”, Lady Geeks Media’s Gissane Sophia shared.
“A Marvel film that went back to its roots! Great storytelling, great performances by Pugh and Harbour, just overall an outstanding movie from start to finish! Must watch in theaters!”, user Kevin W wrote on Rotten Tomatoes’ website.
“Not your run of the mill superhero movie. This is a motley crew of some morally flexible assassins coming together and learning to fight the darkness not only within themselves but also all around”, another user chimed in.
Thunderbolts* is currently running in theatres worldwide.
