Corpse Bride’s director went back to his roots in Netflix’s hit series, but he still had a completely different approach this time.

Tim Burton might not be Wednesday’s director (he helmed only four episodes in the show’s each season), but his presence is everywhere in the Jenna Ortega-led horror-ish mystery drama.

Apart from the gothic premise, Wednesday’s entourage is something that will take Burton’s fans back to the times when they first watched The Nightmare Before Christmas or Corpse Bride.

However, there was a sequence in Wednesday’s season 2 that Burton took full creative control over, though the animated scene still required him to remember a specific animation style he needed to go back in time for.

Tim Burton Wanted ‘Wednesday’ Animated Scene to Look Like a “Student Project”

Despite Burton mostly serving as an executive producer for Wednesday now, he still helmed some of the second season’s episodes, including the premiere one — and fans knew it was definitely him when the animated sequence showed up.

The scene visualizes the legend that Pugsley learns during his first day at Nevermore Academy, recounting the story of an unnamed telekinetic boy who replaced his fragile heart with a metallic clockwork, but since then lost all of his tenderness and kindness.

The sequence boasts of Burton’s feature animation style, though the director had to make it look like it wasn’t him who was behind the visuals.

“I wanted to make this like it’s a student project. It’s a student telling the story, so I wanted it to feel a bit rougher. It was important to have that kind of crude, simplistic look”, Burton revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair upon the episodes’ release on August 6.

Apart from that, the director gave kinda the same instructions to his production team, asking them to imagine that they were working for a start-up on a low budget.

“‘Pretend that you don’t have money,’ which was kind of true”, Burton said.

Tim Burton Directed Two More Episodes for ‘Wednesday’ Season 2 Volume 2

Following the season 1 tradition, the director helmed only half of the new instalment, directing episodes 1, 4, 7, and 8.

The last two are about to be released on Netflix on September 3 alongside two more episodes directed by Angela Robinson.
