The actor has just surpassed his fellow nominee Adrien Brody for the very first time this awards season.

Only several days left until the Academy will announce its winners, and so far the race for the statuette has been quite unpredictable.

Ever since the Golden Globes went away to its new owners, it was Demi Moore who was considered the almost certain winner in the Best Actress category; however, the BAFTAs went on with a completely different favorite and gave the same category’s award to Mikey Madison.

In quite the same way, Best Actor’s nominee Adrien Brody has remained the most probable winner — until last weekend’s SAG Awards where Timothée Chalamet won big and broke a major record.

Timothée Chalamet Is the Youngest Person to Win Best Actor at the SAG Awards

The evening of the event had quite an unexpected outcome when Chalamet was announced the winner instead of Adrien Brody who previously swept all the other major awards.

The former took home his first SAG Award after being nominated three times, also becoming the youngest actor to receive the statuette; previously, Nicolas Cage won in the Best Actor category for his role in Leaving Las Vegas when he was 32.

Taking the stage to get the award, Chalamet started his speech off with thanking his mom, who worked at Actors Equity for 40 years, and also Bob Dylan who the actor portrayed in James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown.

“I know the classiest thing would be to downplay the effort that went into this role, and how much this means to me, but the truth is, this was five and a half years of my life. I poured everything I had into playing this incomparable artist, Mr. Bob Dylan, a true American hero, and it was the honor of a lifetime playing him. It’s an honor I share with Monica, Edward, the entire cast, doing a biopic in a genre that could be perhaps tired. Everyone gave it their all — I’m so deeply grateful to them”, Chalamet stated.

Timothée Chalamet Might Become the Academy’s Youngest Best Actor Too

Despite having fewer chances than Adrien Brody now, Chalamet is still one of the frontrunners for the statuette at the upcoming Oscars ceremony.

If the Academy suddenly decides to follow the same path as the SAG Awards last night, the actor’s win will mark another record-breaking case in the Academy’s history since Chalamet will become the youngest Best Actor to receive the award (ironically, the previous record belongs to his fellow nominee, Adrien Brody).

The Academy will announce its winners on March 2.
