After screening a clip from Paul Thomas Anderson's romantic tragicomedy Punch-Drunk Love, Chalamet commented on how impressive he finds Sandler's performance. The actor said:

“It is one of the most important performances. It's impactful, deeply moving. As a young actor knowing you for your comedic work, seeing that thrown against the context of your other work, I'm like, ‘Wow, this is a fucking incredible actor. I hope I can give a performance like this.”

Indeed, it's hard to imagine anyone else playing the quiet, neurotic character with a ton of complexes and uncontrollable anger issues. Anderson channelled all the energy Sandler usually puts into bizarre physical humor into the story.

The result is an acting performance that even Daniel Day-Lewis appreciated. After watching Punch-Drunk Love, Day-Lewis agreed to work on There Will Be Blood, largely because he recognized Anderson's ability to work with actors.
