You might have never thought the iconic potato gratin is that easy to make.

We all know that, whether they’re mashed or boiled or fried, potatoes are real life savers when it comes to choosing delicious garnish for dinner. However, sometimes we do need some kind of new way to prepare everyone’s favorite vegetable, and the French might have already come up with a good idea long ago.

To make the famous potato gratin, you basically need just 4 essential ingredients and around half an hour of your time — the rest is for the oven to make.

Here’s what you need: 1 kg of potatoes, 2 onions, 60 g of butter, 400 ml of milk, salt and black pepper to taste. Optional: garlic, fresh herbs, and grated cheese.

Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly; slice the onion into rings. Season the potatoes with salt and pepper.

Grease a baking dish with butter and layer the potatoes and onions, repeating the layers several times. The top layer should be a neat layer of potatoes.

Pour hot milk over everything so that it almost covers the potatoes, then drizzle melted butter on top.

Cover the dish with foil and bake at 200 °C for about 40 minutes, then remove the foil, reduce the temperature to 180 °C, and bake for another 40 minutes until golden brown.

Serve hot, adding garlic, herbs, or grated cheese if you like.
