If you needed another reason to give that Supernatural prequel a chance, you got one courtesy of NYCC's The Winchesters panel.

Just recently Jensen Ackles himself talked about The CW being essentially somewhat of a big family, with familiar faces potentially getting a chance to join the actor's passion project, The Winchesters. Well, during The Winchesters panel at NYCC tonight his words were backed up by Tom Welling: The CW's Smallville alum joined the series' cast on stage to the audience shock and delight.

Luckily for us, the team behind The Winchesters decided not to keep potential viewers in the dark any longer: it was revealed during the panel that Tom Welling will take on the role of Campbell hunting family patriarch, Samuel, who taught his daughter Mary (Meg Donnelly) everything she essentially knew. In the original The CW show Samuel Campbell was played rather brilliantly by X-Files' Mitch Pileggi, who went on to join Supernatural 's Jared Padalecki in The CW's Walker. How's that about the network being one big family, huh?

The Winchesters premieres on October 11, 2022, but it's going to take a little longer for Tom Welling to join in on the action; apparently the actor will make his first appearance as Samuel Campbell in episode seven, getting a chance to help his daughter with the whole "saving the world" business and somewhat redeem himself in her eyes.

Bring Welling into the fold was actually Jensen Ackles' idea, and, according to executive producer and showrunner Robbie Thompson, he was immediately on board too. Lately Smallville's biggest star has been experiencing somewhat of a renaissance, with his schedule being super busy and filled with new and exciting projects. After doing a stint on Lucifer, Welling recently signed up for The CW’s new drama series Professionals and Scott Windhauser's action-thriller Deep Six.
