Top 6 Most Gag-Worthy RuPaul's Drag Race Double Shantays So Far

These 6 lipsync performances were so iconic that even RuPaul couldn't pick just one winner. A look back at the best of double shantays.
If you've been keeping up with RuPaul's Drag Race, you know that each season brings some new gags and surprises. Season 16, for example, introduced us to the Rate-A-Queen concept that, despite not being a thing throughout the whole season, added something new and fun to an already great show. And the recent Season 17 brought us the Badonka Dunk Tank twist I personally found very cute.
Yet the most shocking twists aren't planned at all. And one of these twists is a double shantay, of course. It's a very rare occurrence when RuPaul just can't bear to send either queen home and saves both of them.
Today we're looking at 6 most memorable double shantays in Drag Race herstory.
Alyssa Edwards vs. Roxxxy Andrews in Season 5
When Alyssa Edwards and Roxxxy Andrews hit the stage to Whip My Hair by Willow Smith in Season 5, nobody was prepared for what was about to go down.
Iconic is not even a word that can fully describe this lipsync. It was truly legendary, game changing even. The energy was electric from start to finish, but when Roxxxy revealed that wig, we all got to see herstory being made. Meanwhile, Alyssa was dancing like her life was depending on it (which let's be real, it was in a way).
And while some argue that Roxxxy's emotional story is partly a reason for this double save, I absolutely disagree. I am convinced that they both would've stayed either way. They fought hard and they deserved that win.
Angeria Paris VanMicheals vs. Willow Pill in Season 14
This was more of a “dancing with your friend on a Friday night” than a lipsync battle. And this is a part that makes it so good. As Angeria herself put it:
“Me and Willow are dancing together like we are up in the club. Honestly I am sharing this spotlight with the person I am closest to in this competition and it feels amazing.”
And this energy was absolutely contagious. These two really managed to make Telephone by Gaga and Beyoncé even more iconic than it already was. Go besties!
Brooke Lynn Hytes vs. Yvie Oddly in Season 11
Now if Angeria vs. Willow was a friendly showdown, this right here was a real fight.
Season 11 brought us the unforgettable lipsync between Brooke Lynn Hytes and Yvie Oddly to Demi Lovato's Sorry Not Sorry. This was a true clash of styles that somehow created a perfect harmony.
Seriously, this lip sync had EVERYTHING. Flips, splits, kicks, death drops, you name it, they did it. Consequently, RuPaul couldn't send either queen home (and honestly, neither could we viewers).
Anetra vs. Mistress Isabelle Brooks in Season 15
Heavy dresses couldn't stop any drag queen from getting to that top spot.
Anetra, living up to her reputation as a lip-sync assassin, absolutely killed it, even to the more emotional (yet still quite upbeat) song like When Love Takes Over by David Guetta and Kelly Rowland. Meanwhile, Mistress confessed:
“I am in this 60 pound dress but I’m giving them everything I got. I want nothing more than to be America’s next drag superstar.”
And she really did give her everything. I absolutely love rewatching this lipsync for Mistress' facial expression and line delivery alone.
Carmen Carrera vs. Yara Sofia in Season 3
We all need to take a look back at where it all began. Hey Mickey (Spanish Version) by Toni Basil is such a good choice for a lipsync and the queens did not disappoint.
It was again a clash of lipsync styles (and I'm starting to see a pattern here). Yara brought the fierce and Carmen brought the flirty. It was two completely different interpretations of the same song and somehow both worked perfectly.
But the best part about the lipsync was everyone's reaction to the first double shantay on RuPaul’s Drag Race stage ever. If that's been a long time since you’ve seen this one, I'd really advise you to give it a rewatch.
Jewels Sparkles vs. Onya Nurve in Season 17
The latest episode of Season 17 gave us another instant classic when Jewels Sparkles and Onya Nurve took on Amerie's 1 Thing. The anticipation was high from the moment these two hit the stage. Onya wasn't playing around and neither was Jewels. In a confessional she said:
“The odds are stacked against me. But Onya could have 4 wins. I don’t give a f—. I’m a performer. I’m not going home.”
The tension was through the roof, but both queens channeled that energy into performances that were worth it. The episode was emotional enough and I don't think any of us could've handled an elimination, so this double shantay came through just about right.
