What Is 'Tron' & What Were the Previous Movies About?
The Tron franchise is a Disney sci-fi universe that includes movies, animations, comics, and video games. Its history began in 1982 when Steven Lisberger's movie Tron was released.
The protagonist, programmer Kevin Flynn, played by Jeff Bridges, is trapped inside a computer system. He participates in dangerous games and battles and becomes an ally of a guardian program named Tron.
Together, they confront the tyrannical AI, the Master Control Program. Kevin strives to strip the MCP of its power and find a way back to the real world.
In 2010, Disney released a sequel, Tron: Legacy. Joseph Kosinski's production brought viewers back to the updated world of the Grid.
The story takes place 28 years after the events of the first movie. Kevin's son, Sam, receives a mysterious message from his missing father and enters the digital network to find him. There, Sam is aided by the program Quorra. Together, they confront an evil copy of Kevin who has seized power within the network.
Kevin sacrifices himself to destroy the copy, and Sam and Quorra manage to return to reality.
When Will 'Tron: Ares' Be Released?
The movie is scheduled for release on October 10, 2025, but it could have been released much earlier. The idea to continue the Tron story emerged immediately after the 2010 release of Legacy, but production never began.
Filming for Tron: Ares did not begin until January 2024 due to delays caused by the 2023 writers' and actors' strikes.
What Will 'Tron: Ares' Be About?
The third installment will take place in both the virtual world and reality. It follows a next-generation program called Ares that is sent from the digital realm into our world on a dangerous mission.
This will lead to humanity's first encounter with intelligent AI. Predictions suggest that programs will spill out onto the streets, threatening chaos and conflict between humans and digital entities.
ENCOM, which viewers may remember from the previous films, is now headed by Eve Kim. The likely antagonists in the upcoming movie are the descendants of Ed Dillinger, the original Tron villain. In this installment, the Dillinger family will be searching for a key that allows digital objects to exist in the material world.
