‘Twilight’ Jackson Rathbone Explains That Major Jasper Change in Later Movies

The actor, who portrayed one of the entire franchise’s biggest crushes, added something of his own to Jasper’s character after Twilight’s first movie — and fans did take notice. Here’s what Rathbone revealed about the matter years after the movie series came to its end.
One of the most iconic cultural phenomena of the 2010s, the Twilight franchise has introduced millions of its fans to a whole bunch of compelling characters who everyone wished to learn more about, and Jasper Callen is definitely one of the top choices in this case.
Mostly reserved and pretty serious in the first movie, Jackson Rathbone’s character later proved himself as a fighter loyal to his family and, what’s even more important, to girlfriend Alice.
However, this wasn’t the only big change that Jasper has gone through. By the time several of Twilight movies were out, fans started hearing something distinctive in Jasper’s words, and the explanation for this has come only now.
Jackson Rathbone Explains That Big Accent Change in ‘Twilight Movies’
Despite the franchise’s last movie arriving in theatres more than a decade ago, Twilight’s diehard fans still have many questions for the films’ creators and actors to answer, with one of those receiving its long-awaited update from Rathbone just recently.
The actor has recently made an appearance at some talk panel and got caught by a fan wondering why Jasper’s accent changed so much throughout the movies, eventually becoming more Southern by the time the franchise counted several installments.
“I'm from a small town in west Texas, and for the first film, they thought it would be too much, you know — we're teenagers hiding in the Pacific Northwest, so they just said, we'll do a Texas accent in the way that Rob sits down”, the actor responded jokingly, imitating Robert Pattinson’s manner of sitting down with his fingertips on the table in the first movie.
Things changed when British director David Slade came on board for Eclipse, suggesting that Rathbone doesn’t hide his real accent anymore.
"We were having dinner and he said 'Jackson, your accent is amazing, why don't we put it in the film?’. I said, 'Stop talking, I don't like your accent. My people threw your people's tea in the ocean. Get on outta here’. But that's honestly why”, the actor added jokingly.
Jackson Rathbone Would Love to See a Jasper Prequel Happening
Apart from the fact that not many knew about Jasper actually being born in Texas and thus logically having the same accent as Rathbone, there are quite many things to learn about the character.
This is the reason why the actor also keeps his finger crossed about a possible prequel series about Jasper, saying that his character “was a darkness in the past”.
"He's seen literal horror of war at 17 years old, and there's a lot of darkness there. So what I'd love to explore is the idea of when he meets Alice, that she's there to not only send him forward about what happened in life, but to remind him that he's loved and that he actually is worth something”, Rathbone previously revealed at another panel (shared by Movieweb).
