Until Dawn Confusing Post-Credits Scene, Explained by Director: 'It's a Little Tricky'

Until Dawn's post-credits scene confused many viewers – it showed a snowy house, the main setting of the game, which could mean that the movie is a prequel. Here's what the director had to say about it.
The horror movie Until Dawn, based on the game of the same name, got a happy ending – Clover and her friends were able to escape the nightmarish time loop and leave the anomalous zone created by Dr. Hill.
However, the post-credits scene confused those who played the original game – there, the resurrected Dr. Hill whistles while watching the image from the cameras.
We are shown a snow-covered house that looks very similar to the building from the original game – does this mean that the movie was a prequel all along? It's all a bit “tricky,” as the director himself said.
Until Dawn Post-Credits Scene Hints That the Movie Is Actually a Prequel
The house in the snowy location is obviously the next object of Dr. Hill's research, where the next test subjects arrive.
Since a car has just arrived, the movie is not a free adaptation of the game, as one might think after watching the trailers, but a full-fledged prequel to the Until Dawn game.
But wait. Attentive viewers may have noticed that the psychiatrist's office contains documents about Josh, the main character of the original game, which means that the events of the movie cannot happen in a prequel.
Director David F. Sandberg Doesn't Have a Firm Answer (Yet)
Director David F. Sandberg addressed this confusion in an interview with Dexerto:
“It's an Easter egg, sort of… it's a little tricky because while we were shooting it, we actually sort of said it takes place after the game, but what we're doing at the end implies that it could take place before the game. [...] I think it can be left open, at least until they want to do a sequel and we have to figure out exactly what that is.”
So there's no definitive answer, and that's another reason to wait for the sequel confirmation.
What Could Until Dawn 2 Be About?
A possible sequel to Until Dawn may reveal more details about the events of the original game. However, since the horror film has become part of the universe and not just an adaptation, the focus will most likely be on Dr. Hill's new research.
Director David F. Sandberg himself made it clear that he is considering two options for the plot of Until Dawn 2: sending the already familiar characters to a new place or telling about a new group of unlucky friends.
