In the wake of The Last of Us’ raving success, video game adaptations are a new black, but Until Dawn’s movie is out of fashion right after its release — here are some of the first viewers’ reactions.

David F. Sandberg’s survival horror Until Dawn based on the video game of the same name is finally there, but many fans seem to be saving themselves from the watch after first reviews flushed in.

Starring Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino and Peter Stormare who reprises his role from the game, Until Dawn has just been released in theatres, quickly getting itself a label of one of the worst video game adaptations that, well, has little to do with the game itself.

While Until Dawn is yet to prove itself in the box office, the original game’s fans have nothing but words of pity for what the movie’s creators oddly seem very proud of.

Until Dawn Fans Say the New Movie Adaptation ‘Shouldn’t Exist At All’

It’s fair to say the film’s trailer lured many fans into thinking the adaptation would be somewhat faithful to the video game’s storyline, so no wonder many put everything aside to go see the movie on the very first day.

Ironically, Until Dawn was panned by viewers just as quickly.

“As a movie, it sucks. The plot is nonsensical. It butchers the lore of a wendigo. We don’t know anything about the characters. It’s not interesting and wraps up terribly. Maia mitchel is completely wasted and has one of the worst wigs I’ve ever seen. It’s not even a good time loop movie. The characters learn nothing. It’s all by chance”, Redditor friendofbarrys wrote in a thread, adding that “the only redeeming factor is decent gore. But there are no stakes”.

“This movie just shouldn't exist at all. I hate how Until Dawn's name keeps getting tarnished. First the terrible remake, then Ballistic Moon getting shut down, now this. It's being dragged through hell”, Ayotrumpisracist also chimed in, getting support from some others who called the movie “cash grab”.

Until Dawn Creators’ Biggest Achievement Also Seems Like the Movie’s Biggest Problem

As ironic as it gets, the movie’s director David F. Sandberg and producer-writer Gary Dauberman seem to be on a different side when it comes to the storyline’s part that fans slammed the most.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Sandberg revealed he personally loved some major changes that the movie adapted.

“We got to do more, or other, different horror genres that they didn't explore in the game. [It] was a lot of fun to do that expansion, do more of it, and do things that they didn't do in the game”, the director said.

Alternatively, this was exactly what the video game’s fans hated the most in the new adaptation.

“Just got out of the cinemas after watching this and honestly, I would've enjoyed it if it wasn't advertised with the premise of Until Dawn. Just wasn't Until Dawn at all. Or even tweaking the title like "Until Dawn: [some more words here]" just to take out the spirit of the game out of this movie”, sherlockgirlypop wrote in the same thread.

Until Dawn is currently running in theatres worldwide.
