Duncan Idaho died saving Paul in the first movie. The marketing for the third keeps explaining, in increasing detail, that he got better.

The new image landed this week via Empire's Dune: Part Three coverage: Jason Momoa, head shaved at Denis Villeneuve's request, back in the December 18 release. For anyone keeping score, that's a character whose on-screen death — holding off the Sardaukar so Paul and Jessica could escape — was the emotional high point of the 2021 film.

Momoa isn't underselling the return either. In the same Empire piece, he described waiting through the shoot for one particular turn:

"I was just waiting to get to that point where you're like, 'This is my guy, man. I'm going to unleash hell on everyone!'"

— Jason Momoa, to Empire

Readers of Frank Herbert's Dune Messiah shrugged at all this, because the resurrection is the book's opening move: the Tleilaxu regrow Duncan from his own flesh as a ghola called Hayt, metal-eyed and memory-wiped, and send him to Paul as a weapon in a gift's clothing. The marketing isn't inventing a spoiler — it's spoiling faithfully.

How the surprise died in stages

  • March 2026: the first teaser keeps Momoa out entirely.
  • July 8, 2026: the second trailer, premiered at a Los Angeles fan event hosted by Villeneuve and Timothée Chalamet, shows Duncan dueling Paul. Non-book-readers spend the week asking how he's alive.
  • September 2026: official posters give Momoa's return equal billing with Robert Pattinson's new villain.
  • October 2026: the Empire image and the "unleash hell" quote, two months before release.

The r/movies thread on the image split along exactly the line you'd expect. One side mourned the theater moment:

"I really feel they should have kept him out of all the marketing, so the audience would actually be as shocked as Paul when he appears in the story."

— a commenter on r/movies

The other side considered that moment already unrecoverable:

"So? Just cos he appears early doesn't mean the non-book reading audience didn't see him die in the last movie."

— a commenter on r/movies

What's actually been traded away

Both camps can be right about the mechanics and still miss the asymmetry. Book readers lose nothing either way — for them Hayt is chapter-level canon from 1969. The people who had something to lose are precisely the viewers who only know the films, watched Duncan die, and would have met his metal eyes cold in a theater.

That audience is most of the audience, and for them the reveal now belongs to a trailer, three posters and a magazine. Momoa dueling Chalamet will still play on December 18. It just can't land twice.
