No great TV show always gives its fans what they want or expect. Indeed, those unexpected moments and plot twists are part of what keeps us entertained and engaged.

But it's nice to see things come together occasionally in just the way we had hoped. Like when Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly finally got together in The Office or Sheldon and Amy's wedding in The Big Bang Theory.

But was anybody yearning for a romantic relationship between Chicago Fire 's Sam Carver (played by Jake Lockett) and Lieutenant Wendy Seagar (Andy Allo)?

If we're honest, we all expected Carver to find love in the fire station.

After all, it's pretty much a right of passage at Firehouse 51. And it was announced some time ago by showrunner Andrea Newman that Carver would have "upcoming love interests, including one who is a very familiar face".

When "Damage Control" aired though, fans were split on whether this pairing was one they wanted to see. One wrote that the match-up was a "nice surprise" while another went even further, describing them as potentially a "match made in heaven".

Others were less convinced and said the burgeoning romance between the two "felt a little forced", adding that Allo's recurring character should not be "used as a romantic/hook-up storyline".

But that's not the worst of it for those involved in writing, acting and producing this storyline.

One viewer wrote that they "couldn't care less", although the fact they took to Reddit to make their comment does raise the question of just how ambivalent they really are.

What we don't know yet, of course, is how serious this relationship is, or how long it will last. Let's not forget that Andrea Newman said that Carver would have "love interests".

So while the question remains as to whether this unexpected couple's days are numbered, we can take it as read that thought has been given to subsequent relationships we'll see Sam Carver enter into.

It all bodes well for a character who was introduced to fans as a man with a mystery scar, a liking for bar brawls and a frosty relationship with his fellow academy graduate Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo).

So, no, it would appear that nobody asked for this relationship between Carver and Seagar.

But it also seems likely that there are multiple layers to unpack when it comes to Sam Carver and that this fling may end up being a minor storyline in his overall story on the show.
