Who Plays Wednesday’s Grandmama? Meet This ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ Star
Tim Burton’s show has just introduced yet another eccentric character in the Addams family, and she might look very familiar to Absolutely Fabulous’ fans.
The Addams family is Netflix’s Wednesday keeps expanding as more characters are joining in, this time with Wednesday’s grandmama and Morticia Addams’ estranged mom Hester Frump entering the scene.
In the series, she’s portrayed by Joanna Lumley, a British actress who is famous for the role of Patsy in the BBC hit sitcom Absolutely Fabulous.
Apart from that, you could also see her as a Bond girl in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, an evil stepmother in Ella Enchanted and Naomi Lapaglia’s aunt Emma in Martin Scorsese’s biographical black comedy The Wolf of Wall Street.
‘Wednesday’ Didn’t Change Hester Frump As Radically As Some Have Thought
The announcement of Lumley portraying Wednesday’s Grandmama cause quite a stir among the original Addams family movies’ fans — just because the character does look all posh and fit, unlike the Grandmama in the previous versions of the story.
However, the whole thing was nothing more than a confusion, and fans quickly grasped why Tim Burton’s Wednesday was wrongfully accused of going against the canon.
In the previous movies and shows about the Addams family, there’s one witch-looking Grandmama that appears more frequently and is generally considered Gomez Addams’ mother, Eudora.
In Netflix’s series, however, Grandmama is Morticia’s mom, Hester Frump, and has nothing to do with the appearance that Eudora usually had in the previous instalments.
“I adore Joanna Lumley, but man, I was hoping to see THIS version of Grandmama. I truly think Wednesday would have a not-so-well hidden soft spot for her eccentric witchy grandmother. She'd also be more comic accurate”, Redditor alez_633 recently complained about the matter in a thread.
The answer didn’t take long to arrive though.
“That's Eudora, not Hester. The movies did a weird thing by making her Morticia's mother, but she has always been Gomez and Fester's mother”, Ok-Persimmon3140 commented.
Will Grandmama Addams Appear in ‘Wednesday’?
Yes! In fact, she already appeared in season 2 episode 4, titled "If These Woes Could Talk". However, we expect even more of her in the remaining episodes of the second chapter.
Wednesday’s season 2 volume 2 will be landing on Netflix on September 3.
