Stephen King’s horror universe made a big promise to expand itself in the upcoming It-based TV series Welcome to Derry, but to some even the first teaser does look uninspiring so far. Here’s what It’s fans have to say about the future show.

The Bill Skarsgård-led horror It and its 2019 sequel became a breaking point for Stephen King’s novel of the same name, but the first project expanding the evil clown’s backstory doesn’t seem to bring anything new so far.

Even though it might still be too early to predict, right now it does feel like the case of It: Welcome to Derry, the upcoming prequel show to King’s 1986 novel and It movies which will see the returns of Pennywise the Clown every 27 years, with Skarsgård reprising his role.

While the series’ first season isn’t coming to streaming until this fall, the movies’ fans are already convinced Pennywise’s story this time might be pointless after all.

Fans Think ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ First Teaser Doesn’t Tease Anything New

With the premise that promises to delve into Pennywise’ past and the history of the evil creature’s visits to Derry, the upcoming show has just released its first teaser that, according to some fans, doesn’t promise anything but some kind of reimagining of the same story.

“So far looks like retelling same story as original IT, but in 60s? Why again use story about group of kids, that try to solve same mystery? I think story with disappeared settlers would be much better for prequel series”, Redditor DioNoose complained in a thread.

“I’ll definitely check it out, but we already got this in Chapter 1……i wish the era this was set in was older”, phatboyart agreed.

“Huge disappointment, I wish the prequel explored the origins of Pennywise”, AccurateInflation167 commented.

‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Director Says the Show Will “Do Justice to the Book”

While fans got quickly divided about the show right after the first teaser’s release, It: Welcome to Derry’s director Andy Muschietti, who also helmed It and It Chapter Two back in the day, keeps hope that the upcoming series will become a solid addition to Stephen King’s story.

“This is a book we love a lot, and we felt that there was still a lot of story to be covered. It’s so rich with characters and events, we thought we would do justice to the book and the fans by going back into this world. Specifically, we are telling the stories of the interludes, writings by Mike Hanlon based on his investigation that includes interviews he conducts with the older people in the town. In Welcome to Derry, we touch on the usual themes that were talked about in the movie — friendship, loss, the power of unified belief — but this story focuses also on the use of fear as a weapon, which is one of the things that is also relevant to our times”, Muschietti revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

When Is ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Being Released?

HBO is yet to announce the premiere date for the show’s first season which is currently expected to arrive on streaming sometime this fall.
