What happened to Cruz on Chicago Fire? 'Almost like a death' — the showrunner's own words about what the rescue cost him
Joe Cruz came out of the West Pershing warehouse alive, and the two people he went back in for didn't.
Joe Miñoso has played Cruz on NBC's Chicago Fire since the show began in 2012, one of the few original cast members left at Firehouse 51. The story began in the season 14 finale, which aired on May 13, 2026, and picked up in the season 15 premiere on October 7, the first season under new showrunner Victor Teran.
The rescue
The finale traps two civilians inside a burning warehouse. Christopher Herrmann, the firehouse's veteran lieutenant, offers to go in after them. Cruz insists on doing it himself.
A beam comes down before he can get them out. Both civilians die under the debris, and Cruz breaks his spine. The same episode reveals that his wife, Chloe, is pregnant with twins.
Three months later
The premiere jumps ahead three months, and the damage is permanent:
- Cruz is in a wheelchair.
- An MRI shows only a sliver of healthy tissue left around the fracture, not enough for him to ever fight fires again.
- His crew rebuilds his house for his return home and his treatment.
- Herrmann, who volunteered for the rescue Cruz took from him, carries the guilt.
"It's going to weigh heavily on him," Teran told TVLine of Herrmann. The fire also hits Kelly Severide, now captain of Firehouse 51, who is blamed for the two civilian deaths before he proves he wasn't responsible.
'Almost like a death'
For Cruz, the injury ends his career as a firefighter. Teran described what that means for the character to TVLine.
"Just the thought of giving it up [...] is almost like a death for him," Teran said.
The writers did consider the literal version. Teran told CinemaBlend that killing Cruz in the fire was on the table: "every option was on the table, and every option was seriously considered." What decided it was what a death would have done to the season: "We would have to move past it fairly quickly if he had died."

Nor is the show planning a recovery. "There won't be, like, a miraculous recovery tomorrow," Teran told Soaps.com.

When Miñoso leaves
The injury is how Chicago Fire writes Miñoso out. His exit was first reported on July 29, 2026, months before the premiere, and he stays for a few episodes to finish Cruz's story. His last episode is the show's 300th, season 15's fifth, airing November 4.
Ending Cruz's run on the 300th "just felt like a kind of poetic element," Teran told Soaps.com, calling it "his final episode for now."
"And we're not done with Joe Cruz, I just want to say that," Teran added. Miñoso will also direct an episode later in the season.
