What happened to Nate on Ted Lasso? Even the actor answers season 4 questions with a smirk

Which is deranged, considering where we left him: redemption arc complete, apology delivered, back at Richmond as an assistant coach under Roy, happily coupled up with Jade. Three in-show years later, Ted's coaching the new women's team out of the same building, and the wonder kid has evaporated like he was never there. The kit room remembers, even if the script won't.

The Easter egg that broke containment

Episode 5 finally acknowledged the ghost — sideways. When new assistant coach Alice Chilton melts down at the team, Ted suspends her and explains himself with a story about a previous coach who had her same fire, a coach Ted failed to notice was burning until he'd been "burned to a crisp." He never says the name. He doesn't have to. Every person watching sat up like a meerkat.

Co-creator Brendan Hunt, asked directly about the vanishing, offered this masterpiece of saying nothing:

"I think it's possible that you'll find out what happened to Nate."

Possible. Before season's end. Cool cool cool cool cool.

The actor is enjoying this way too much

Nick Mohammed has spent the entire press cycle doing the verbal equivalent of a smirk. Pressed on whether Nate returns, he went full diplomat: "It's all speculative as to whether Nate will be back" — while happily musing about the character like a man who has definitely read something we haven't, saying he likes to think Nate landed closer to his sweet season-1 self than the "Darth Vadery" villain era.

A few reasons the silence smells like strategy, not snub:

• Mohammed is the guy who once accidentally leaked the season 3 ending online, then publicly promised it "won't happen again" for season 4 — the tight lips are a bit, and he's committed.
• The show spent three seasons building the most argued-about redemption arc on television; torching it off-screen would be pointless.
• That episode 5 monologue is a loaded gun on the wall, and this show does not hang props for decoration.

So: what happened to Nate? Officially, nobody will say. Unofficially, everyone involved is grinning like they've got a secret, five episodes remain, and I have never trusted a smirk more in my life.
