What happened to Priya in The Chelsea Detective? The show spent exactly one line on it
DS Priya Shamsie worked every case of The Chelsea Detective's first series at Max Arnold's side, and she left the show without appearing in the second.
Peter Fincham's crime drama stars Adrian Scarborough as DI Max Arnold of Chelsea CID. Its first series, four feature-length mysteries, premiered on Acorn TV in February 2022, with Sonita Henry as Priya, his detective sergeant. The show has run three more series since, the latest in August 2026, all without her.
Who Priya was
The first series introduces her mid-upheaval. She has just had a baby daughter and comes back to work after "only three months of maternity leave," to Max's surprise. He's forgotten the baby's name. Her husband, Nitin, is played by Davood Ghadami.
The one line
Series 2 opened on August 28, 2023, with "The Blue Room." Max has a new partner: DS Layla Walsh, played by Vanessa Emme, newly transferred to Chelsea from Exeter Police.
Priya isn't in the episode, and she gets no farewell scene in it or anywhere else. The show settles her absence in a single line of dialogue: she has moved to Brighton.
Four feature-length cases as Max's partner, and her exit fits in one sentence.
No episode returns to it. Layla has been Max's partner ever since, through series 3 and the fourth series that aired this August.

Why Sonita Henry left
The production has never explained it, and Henry hasn't made a public statement. The only account came before series 2 filmed. In November 2022, TellyVisions reported that Henry would "step away from the series" because she'd been cast in other projects, including Surfside Girls and Black Cake.
Her schedule since bears that out:
- 2023 — Black Cake for Hulu, plus Father Brown, Silo and Mix Tape.
- 2024 — two films, Deadpool & Wolverine and Role Play.
- 2025 — Wild Cherry, across five episodes.
In Wild Cherry, she plays Detective Khan.
