Slow Horses ends its sixth season on River Cartwright's boot, and the next word anyone hears about him is a postcard from the afterlife.

Season 6 of the Apple TV spy series wrapped on October 21 with "Judgment Day." Jack Lowden plays River, the slow horse with a famous spy grandfather, and Gary Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, who runs Slough House. This season is the first to adapt two of Mick Herron's novels at once: Joe Country, the sixth in the series, and Slough House, the seventh. River's ending comes from the second one.

What happens to River in the finale

He gets through the fighting, barely. By the last episode he has been shot in one hand and stabbed in the other. In the battle at Diana Taverner's Suffolk house, his estranged father, Frank Harkness, kills the Russian assassin Jane before she can kill River. River lets Frank get away.

Then Catherine Standish tells River that a neighbor has seen a light on for days at the house of his late grandfather, David Cartwright. Sid Baker, River's colleague, had promised to leave a light on for him there. River drives over, sees her through the window and hears her in the shower upstairs.

He puts the kettle on and takes out a bottle of wine and two glasses. Before he can pour, he drops to his knees, struggling to breathe. He tries to call out "Sid," but she can't hear him over the water. He reaches for his phone and collapses. The season's last shot is his boot on the floor, twitching, then still.

The crowbar

The poison is Novichok, and the show put it on a crowbar that River handles. Head writer Gaby Chiappe told SlashFilm the clue was deliberately easy to miss.

The "breadcrumb trail back to the Novichok, I guess, is laid very lightly," Chiappe told SlashFilm.

Lamb's postcard

Apple's teaser for season 7 is the only thing the show has offered since. In it, Standish asks Lamb whether he's heard anything about River. Lamb says he got a postcard, and quotes it: "Weather's lovely in the afterlife. Sunsets to die for. Love and hugs."

River doesn't appear in the teaser, and neither does Sid. Apple hasn't said whether Lowden is in season 7.

How the book is different

The show changes three things about River's last scene in Slough House:

  • The object — in the novel, Russian agents smear the nerve agent on the doorknob of the front door. The show moves it to the crowbar.
  • Who finds him — in the novel, Sid wakes up, can't find River, remembers the front door rattling in the night and finds him collapsed on the kitchen floor. She calls for help, holds him and begs him to stay alive. In the show, she's in the shower and never hears him.
  • The last image — the novel leaves River with Sid and ends on Lamb, alone in the dark. The show ends on River's boot.

Chiappe said the writers talked a lot about "how to make it land kind of as it does in the novel."

In the book, River is found. The show ends before anyone gets to him.

What the books do next

River lives. Herron's next two novels deal with what the poison cost him:

  • Bad Actors (2022) — River survives but sits the book out, recovering. Season 7 adapts Bad Actors.
  • Clown Town (2025) — River is back on the page, though not at work. Herron told NPR that River is "recovering from an attack of Novichok poisoning that happened some books ago," and that "He's not yet been passed fit for duty."

With time on his hands, River donates his grandfather's library to the Service's college in Oxford. In transit, one book goes missing, and a video record of the study shelves shows it had been there. River sets out to find it.
