What park is Anna Pigeon set in? Nevada Barr's novels never stayed in one

We are, apparently, living through the Golden Age of Park Rangers Solving Murders, and I refuse to apologize for loving it. USA Network's Anna Pigeon is the latest entry, and if you came here with one simple question — where is this thing set — congratulations, you've asked the one question this franchise has spent three decades refusing to answer in fewer than 19 books.

The show: one park, planted flag

The series parks itself (sorry) in Glacier National Park in northwest Montana, where Tracy Spiridakos' Anna — a former New York theater stage manager running from her husband's murder — trades grief for a ranger badge and immediately trips over a body count that would make Cabot Cove blush.

The books: Anna never unpacked

Nevada Barr's novels, on the other hand, treat the entire National Park system like a crime-scene punch card. The series kicked off in 1993 with Track of the Cat, set in the West Texas backcountry of Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and then Anna just kept transferring:

• Isle Royale in Lake Superior (A Superior Death)
• Mesa Verde's cliff dwellings (Ill Wind)
• the caves of Carlsbad Caverns (Blind Descent)
• the Statue of Liberty, which is technically a national park and I think about that a lot (Liberty Falling)
• Yosemite, the Natchez Trace, Dry Tortugas, Big Bend — she gets around

The books' whole gimmick is that the park changes every time. The show's whole gimmick is that it doesn't.

That was a deliberate call. Executive producer Lea Thompson, who chased this adaptation for years, told USA Insider that showrunner Morwyn Brebner built the season by "taking the essence of the character" and pulling supporting players from across the different novels into one place.

So: Glacier on your screen, Guadalupe Mountains on the page, and roughly a dozen other parks in Anna's rearview. If season 2 relocates her, honestly, it would be the most faithful adaptation choice possible.
