What’s Wrong With The Rookie Season 7? All Fans Say the Same Thing

The Rookie Season 8 is confirmed, but fans are getting mildly frustrated with overdramatization of the show. Let's find out what happened to the beloved Season 1 vibe.
Season 7 of The Rookie is currently airing, and the numbers don't lie: with an impressive 80% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and four episodes to go, you'd think everything is perfect in this universe. The show continues to deliver intense moments and enough plot twists to keep us entertained.
But there's a shift in the show's DNA that's been building season by season. And the fans are catching on.
The Rookie Season 1 Vibes Are Nowhere to Be Found (& We Want Them Back)
As hard as it is to admit, The Rookie is becoming increasingly unrealistic. In Season 1, the show really nailed what it's like to be a rookie cop. We had John Nolan dealing with regular patrol duties, learning the ropes, and yeah, maybe he helped catch a few bad guys here and there. But nothing that dramatic.
Fast forward to the last few seasons and suddenly our cops are basically superheroes. We all love a good action sequence. But when every episode feels like a summer blockbuster, it kind of loses that special charm that made us fall in love with the show in the first place.
Every episode now feels like it has to top the last one with even more outrageous scenarios.
Fans Respond to the Latest The Rookie Seasons
The shift toward more explosive content with each passing season has left some fans yearning for the simpler, more grounded storytelling of Season 1.
“I thought the most unrealistic thing had to be the number of shootouts. I can’t imagine there are anywhere near that amount of situations that result in everyone shooting up everywhere,” Redditor FluidKey333 wrote.
“Is it me or is the rookie getting more and more unrealistic every season. It started out more of showing what it’s like to start out as a cop and learn the ropes, but now almost every episode has as much going on as 10 episodes of the older seasons,” another fan, Temporary-Meeting611 on Reddit noticed.
The Rookie Season 8 Is Happening: Release Date
Despite all of these concerns, there's good news: The Rookie has officially been renewed for Season 8. While we don't have an official release date yet, you can catch new episodes of Season 7 on Tuesdays at 9/8c on ABC. And if you're feeling nostalgic for the earlier seasons or need to catch up, all episodes are available on Hulu.
