When A24 Walks Away: Why Bleecker Street Said Yes to 'Victorian Psycho'

A gothic thriller survives rejection to find a new champion.
Following the world of gothic thrillers with keen interest, I couldn’t pass by the news that Victorian Psycho, Zachary Wigon’s new film, has already switched homes mid-production.
Filming began in Ireland, only for A24 to unexpectedly step away. Soon after, Bleecker Street picked it up, drawn by the script and keen to push it towards a 2026 release. That kind of handover always raises eyebrows, doesn’t it?
A Governess with Secrets
Based on Virginia Feito’s novel, the story follows a governess who unsettles a remote Victorian manor. Maika Monroe now leads the film, stepping in after Margaret Qualley’s departure.
With Monroe’s track record in It Follows, Watcher and Longlegs, it feels like casting that could steady the ship. Still, some may wonder if Qualley’s exit was what nudged A24 out.
A New Champion
Bleecker Street adds the project to a slate that includes Relay and Spinal Tap II. For some, leaving A24 looks like a downgrade. Yet one studio’s hesitation can be another’s opportunity — and perhaps Bleecker simply spotted the potential A24 overlooked.
