Thomas Gibson played Aaron Hotchner from the first episode in 2005, through 11 years and into a 12th season. The character's departure was not written into any season arc, and the writers were assembling it while the season was already on air.

His final on-screen appearance is season 12, episode 2, "Sick Day", broadcast on 5 October 2016. Hotchner is formally written out four episodes later, in "Elliott's Pond" on 16 November 2016, when it's revealed he has resigned from the BAU and entered Witness Protection with his son Jack.

The gap the writers had to cover

Episode 3, "Taboo", aired on 12 October 2016 with Rossi explaining that Hotch was on special assignment at the Director's request. Emily Prentiss came back to help — Paget Brewster had already been booked to cover a short absence, and was upgraded to series regular once the absence stopped being short.

The in-story reason for the exit, when it landed, was Peter Lewis, better known as Mr Scratch: after one too many threats at home, Hotch chose full-time fatherhood over the unit. "Elliott's Pond" drew 7.62 million viewers.

What happened off screen

The trigger was a single afternoon on set. Here is the sequence:

  • 26 July 2016 — while filming episode 2, which he was also directing, Gibson questioned a line and was overruled by co-executive producer and writer Virgil Williams.
  • The altercation — recounting the disagreement to castmates, Gibson says Williams came towards him and his foot came up and made contact with Williams's leg. He apologised the following day.
  • The suspension — originally for two episodes, which is why the "special assignment" was written as temporary.
  • 12 August 2016 — after an internal investigation by ABC Studios, Gibson was fired.

It was not a first incident. A 2010 dispute with an assistant director had resulted in mandatory anger-management counselling, and there was a DUI arrest in 2013.

Gibson gave his account to People in 2016, and the detail that stuck was how ordinary the day had seemed:

"We shot the scene, I went home — and I never got to go back."

What happened to Hotch afterwards

Season 13 confirmed he left Witness Protection after Peter Lewis died, but never returned to the BAU. Showrunner Erica Messer, asked by TVLine in 2017 about the circumstances, said she wasn't sure how much she could say, citing legal reasons.

Hotchner's last appearance in the series is not really an appearance at all: he turns up in Spencer Reid's hallucination in the season 15 finale, "And in the End...", in 2020, assembled from existing footage.
