The Insidious franchise has two prequels, a legacy sequel, one recurring dead lady, and now a sixth film with a brand-new family. Asking when anything "takes place" in this series is like asking a ghost for its birth certificate. But let's try.

What we know for sure

Out of the Further is a direct follow-up to The Red Door (2023) — chronologically the latest chapter in the saga, sitting at the very end of the timeline. Sony's own franchise recap orders the story: Insidious, Chapter 2, The Red Door, then Out of the Further, with the two Elise prequels tucked before everything.

It also swaps families entirely. The Lamberts are out; Gemma (Amelia Eve), a young mother in her childhood home, is in — with a never-before-seen ability to drag things out of the Further into our world. Hence the title. Hence everything.

What the internet cannot agree on

The exact gap, however, is a cage match:

The film itself declines to stamp a date on screen, which I choose to read as director Jacob Chase's little gift to forum moderators. Chase, for his part, came in fully aware of the bloat:

"There's also been five movies, and that's a lot, and it's too many."

A franchise director said that. Out loud. To Variety. Anyway: it takes place after The Red Door, in the timeline's present day, and the rest is between you and your Reddit thread of choice.
