Where is Sheriff Country filmed? The "California" town sits about 2,500 miles from California
Morena Baccarin's sheriff patrols a Northern California county with redwoods, wildfire country, and a tavern on a two-lane road. The county has an Ontario postal code.
Sheriff Country films entirely in Ontario, Canada, with almost all of it inside the Greater Toronto Area. The fictional Edgewater is about 2,500 miles from the part of California it's meant to be in, and the show isn't even shot in Vancouver, where its parent series Fire Country is made. The stated reason is personal logistics: Toronto keeps Baccarin closer to family in New York than British Columbia would.
What plays Edgewater
The production distributed the town across several Ontario municipalities, which is why Edgewater has more architectural range than a place that size should:
- Milton — Main Street is downtown Edgewater, roughly 25 miles west of Toronto, with St. Paul's United Church and the Chudleigh's orchard area in the mix.
- Lowville — the Halton Conservation building serves as the Edgewater County Sheriff's Office.
- Brampton — Mickey's yellow house and the children's family home.
- Mississauga — the Fort York Motel becomes the Long Ridge Motel, plus the Old Derry Road Bridge and the Beverly Hills Manor estate.
- Vaughan — the rustic log cabin is a standing set at Kleinburg Film Studios.
- Mount Hope and the York University area — The Store, and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority building doing duty as Fralcy Horizons headquarters.
The California that does appear
Very little, and never with actors in it.
The one confirmed piece of actual California in season one is an aerial establishing shot of Ferndale used in the finale.
The rest of the geography is borrowed the same way. Smokey's Tavern exterior is the Trading Post Eatery in Langley, British Columbia. The hospital establishing shot is the Ashland Springs Hotel in Oregon. There's stock footage of Fairbanks International Airport in Alaska. Edgewater is assembled from four states and two provinces.
Why it works anyway
Southern Ontario's conservation lands do a convincing job of standing in for Humboldt County if you don't push the tree species too hard, and the small-town main streets west of Toronto are period-neutral in a way most of California's are not. The show's terrain problem is the one every Northern California production has — the specific look of coastal redwoods — which is exactly what the Ferndale plate is there to solve.
Fire Country shoots in British Columbia. Sheriff Country shoots in Ontario. The two series share a county on paper and about 2,700 miles of Canada in practice.
That's worth knowing before the crossover. Fire Country's Bode, Manny and Eve appear in Sheriff Country's "No Way In" on November 6, 2026, at 8/7c, with part two on Fire Country at 9. The scenes that put both casts in the same frame have to be built rather than simply scheduled.
Where the show stands
Created by Joan Rater, Tony Phelan and Max Thieriot for Jerry Bruckheimer Television and CBS Studios, Sheriff Country premiered October 17, 2025, ran 20 episodes through May 22, 2026, and averaged between 4.38 and 5.08 million viewers, with the pilot reaching roughly 6.25 million including DVR. It holds 75% on Rotten Tomatoes and 67 on Metacritic.
Season two starts Friday, October 9, 2026 at 8/7c, with Fire Country's fifth season behind it at 9. Amanda Arcuri, who plays Mickey's daughter Skye, and Ian Quinlan have both been upgraded to series regulars.

For the record: Milton, Ontario has a population of about 130,000 and a commuter rail line into Toronto. Edgewater does not.
