Where is Spencer in All American? He's been seen exactly once since season 6
All American is deep into its eighth and final season, and the group chat keeps asking the same question with increasing volume: where the hell is Spencer James?
The show that was literally built around the man has been running its farewell lap mostly without him, and if you've been yelling "SPENCER???" at your TV since the July premiere, you're not broken. You're just paying attention.
The in-universe answer
Spencer is fine. Spencer is, in fact, living his absolute best life off-camera. By the end of season 6 he'd been drafted into the NFL, played in a Super Bowl, and married Olivia, before the two of them packed up for New York. That's why he's not around Crenshaw or Beverly Hills — the man has a whole professional football career three time zones away, and now, per the final season's promo, twin girls on the way. Olivia already made her very pregnant return in episode 8; Spencer's turn is the show's endgame card.
The on-screen answer
Here's the stat that sounds fake but isn't: since his season 6 send-off, Daniel Ezra has appeared as Spencer exactly once — a brief guest spot in season 7's "Shadowboxin'," an episode he also happened to direct. One appearance. Across two seasons. For the character whose name might as well be in the title.
That scarcity was the plan, not a snub. When Ezra stepped back after season 6, he told The Hollywood Reporter:
"I still plan on keeping Spencer's presence alive."
And to be fair to the man — a wedding, a Super Bowl, and a perfect goodbye season is a much better exit than most TV leads get.

What's left before the clock runs out
The final stretch is where all of this pays off:
- The season 8 trailer confirmed Spencer and Olivia both return before the end, twins and all.
- Ezra is directing the series finale himself, closing the loop on the show he fronted for six years.
- The whole final season unfolds over just one in-universe week, so when Spencer lands, it counts.
Ezra hasn't even read the finale script and he's already emotionally compromised. He told People:
"Apparently, it's very emotional, very beautiful, and so I'm very excited."
So: Spencer is in New York, Spencer is thriving, and Spencer is coming back for the ending — with his old show runner-turned-director watching from behind the camera. One appearance since season 6, and the second one is going to wreck us all.
