Here's a fun industry secret: when a fantasy show looks suspiciously good — real stone, real dust, real trains that real dictators once napped on — it's usually because somebody skipped the green screen and just went somewhere. The Librarians: The Next Chapter went somewhere. Specifically, Belgrade, Serbia, where the entire series is shot, and where producer Jonathan English notes "it's the first time a US network TV series has been set in Belgrade."
Not filmed-in-Belgrade-pretending-to-be-Prague. Set there. The Library's annex lives in a Belgrade castle, and the show wears the city like a very good coat.
The actual places you're looking at
- Kalemegdan / Belgrade Fortress — the Military Museum entrance plays the exterior of the castle housing the Library. A real medieval fortress, doing fantasy labor.
- Tito's Blue Train (Plavi voz) — the vintage luxury train once used by Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito, now moonlighting as a supernatural set piece.
- St. Mark's Church, Knez Mihailova street, the Zvezdara Observatory, and the White Palace — because when the whole city is a backdrop, you use the whole city.
Interiors are done at a Serbian studio, and the location work was strong enough to land Belgrade on the European Film Commissions Network's 2025 Location Awards shortlist. Which is the location-scout equivalent of an Emmy nomination, and honestly harder to get.
About that Indiana Jones thing
The franchise has been chasing the "Indy with a library card" energy since the Noah Wyle TV movies, but the new cast talks about it like it's baked into the walls. Jessica Green, who plays Guardian-in-training Charlie, put it plainly when asked who the show is for: "If they're fans of shows like Doctor Who or Indiana Jones" — this is their show, she says, and they're going to love it.
When your workplace is an actual fortress and your commute involves a dead president's train, "feels like Indiana Jones" stops being a metaphor and starts being a job description.
Season 2 shot in Belgrade too, so no, they're not moving to a Vancouver soundstage anytime soon. The whip stays in the family.
