Hollywood finally made its Resident Evil reboot this fall. Carl Grimes made his for free, with Greg Nicotero's monsters, and put it on YouTube a month later.

The short answer: BIOHAZARD is free on YouTube, where it premiered October 14. It runs about 19 minutes, and it's a live-action adaptation of the garage fight from Resident Evil 7 — the first real brawl between Ethan Winters and Jack Baker.

Chandler Riggs — Carl Grimes to anyone who watched The Walking Dead between 2010 and 2018 — wrote it, directed it, and plays Ethan himself. He didn't come alone: Jack Baker is played by TWD alum Jason Douglas, and the effects came with equipment from Greg Nicotero, the KNB EFX co-founder who built The Walking Dead's zombies for over a decade. The production converted a former cigar factory in Tampa Bay into the Baker estate and leaned on physical sets, practical effects, and stunt work instead of CGI.

Riggs was candid about why he bothered:

"[I wanted to] see a good, true-to-the-game live-action adaptation of Resident Evil."

The timing he almost beat

That quote has a specific target. Zach Cregger's big-budget Resident Evil reboot hit theaters in September, and Riggs admitted the fan film was racing it:

"We were trying to beat the clock and get it out about a month ago, but parts just didn't align that way."

He missed the finish line by a month, and arguably won anyway: his is the one adapting the game's own scenario, scene for scene. The one creative liberty he cops to is the camera — the short plays in third person, where RE7 famously locked you into Ethan's eyes, and Riggs called stepping into the role "absolutely an intimidating thing."

Three Walking Dead veterans made this: Carl plays Ethan, Tobin plays Jack Baker, and the man who built the show's zombies supplied the effects gear.

Rounding out the cast: Mary Rachel Quinn, Eugenie Bondurant, Johnathan O'Neil, and Sam Coyles. If the view counts justify it, "garage fight" is a suspiciously franchise-ready place to have started.
