Where was Last Seen filmed? The novel is set in East Texas, and the UK was the producers' first pick — neither made the cut
Apple TV's missing-child thriller moved countries twice before a single frame was shot. The version that made it to air is set and filmed entirely in one Australian state.
Last Seen premiered globally on September 9, 2026, six episodes, two on day one and then weekly through October 7. Patrick Brammall plays Ian Ridley, a police detective turned dispatcher whose daughter vanished eleven years earlier, and who takes a distress call he believes is from her. Every location in it is Victoria, Australia — the production was, in Apple's own phrasing, "entirely set and filmed in Victoria."
The source material starts a long way from there. Ryan David Jahn's The Dispatcher, published in 2011, is set in the fictional town of Bulls Mouth in East Texas, and its protagonist is named Ian Hunt rather than Ian Ridley.
Where the camera actually went
Portland, on Victoria's far southwest coast, plays the fictional town of Port McKenna. The rest spreads across the state:
- Portland and Warrnambool — the Shipwreck Coast townships supplying the series' regional exteriors and harbor work.
- Warrock Station, near Casterton — a heritage homestead property close to the South Australian border.
- The Upper Yarra Valley — farmland, river flats and hill country.
- The Mornington Peninsula — additional coastal material.
- Docklands Studios Melbourne — interiors and the technically controlled sequences.
Christian Schwochow directed all six episodes, with Bonnie Elliott ACS shooting, Chris Kennedy on production design and Cappi Ireland on costume. Principal photography ran from March 2025.
Why Australia won the argument
The show was developed by Australian writer Kris Mrksa, produced by Joanna Werner's Werner Film Productions in Melbourne with the UK's 60Forty Films, and funded partly through VicScreen's Victorian Screen Incentive and the federal Location Offset. That's the commercial half of the answer.
The creative half is a plot problem. The novel's premise requires a girl to be held for years within driving distance of her own family without being found, which needs a landscape big enough and empty enough to hide someone in plain sight.
Australia was chosen because the scale of the country can support a child living unnoticed close to home — a condition East Texas and the UK both struggled to meet at the scale the story required.
The British version that never happened
Early development did consider a United Kingdom setting, which makes sense on paper given 60Forty Films is a London company and Maxine Peake is in the cast. It didn't survive contact with the geography. Britain is dense, heavily surveilled and small; the distances the story depends on don't exist there.
Six episodes, one director, one state, and a fictional town built out of a real one. Portland's population is around 10,000.
What it was worth to Victoria
Government figures put the production's contribution to the state economy at roughly $50 million, with spending concentrated in regional communities around Portland and Warrnambool and hundreds of jobs created. Local paper The Standard covered the shoot as a south-west Victoria story rather than an Apple one, which is about right — the series treats the coast as a character and shoots it in wide, cold daylight.
