Season 1 of Murderbot ended with rave reviews, and it will return for a second season. But which book will serve as the basis for the next chapter of the Apple TV+ series? We have the answer.

Apple TV+'s sci-fi series, Murderbot, based on Martha Wells's works, is officially returning for a second season.

The first season, based on the novella All Systems Red, successfully introduced viewers to the story of a SecUnit who hacked into his own control module to gain freedom.

With filming of the second season confirmed, the question arises – which book in the series will be adapted next?

'Artificial Condition' Is a Perfect Pick for 'Murderbot' Season 2

The first season finale ended with an important twist: the Preservation Aux bought out SecUnit's contract with the corporation, freeing it from forced subordination.

Despite having become attached to these people, Murderbot decided to embark on an independent journey. This moment aligns perfectly with the beginning of the second book in the series, Artificial Condition.

There Are All the Chances 'Artificial Condition' Will Be Adapted Next

So far, the series remains quite close to the spirit of the original works, although it allows for some changes. The first four stories in the book series are rather short, and even though the average episode duration of the show was 22 minutes, the plot simply would not fill an entire season.

Therefore, even though the scriptwriters tried to adapt all the key events from the original source material, they filled in the gaps with their own ideas.

It's also important to note that Martha Wells is involved in the production as a consultant, which increases the chances that the adaptation will be accurate and that Artificial Condition will be adapted next.

What Is 'Artificial Condition' About?

Murderbot finally gains long-awaited freedom. However, a SecUnit can't travel alone, so it disguises itself as an ordinary person. This proves difficult because it's not easy to give up the habits of a SecUnit embedded in the program.

The first intelligent Research Transport vessel was able to figure him out. However, ART (that's how Murderbot named him) is in no hurry to hand Murderbot over to the authorities. Instead, ART tries to make friends with Murderbot.

The main character gets his new friend hooked on TV series. In return, ART helps the SecUnit become more humanlike.

However, Murderbot still has to decide where to go. In the past, he lost control due to a software virus and destroyed an expedition of miners.

After this incident, he hacked his control module so that he would not commit such monstrous acts by obeying someone else's will. Now, he decides to find the culprits by visiting the mine.
