Which of His Novels George Martin Wants to Adapt Next? The Answer Is Surprising (But Promising)

The author’s most recent adaptation, epic dark fantasy In the Lost Lands, is one of this year’s biggest flops so far.
Having risen to stardom after publishing his A Song of Ice and Fire which remains unfinished, George Martin has been long known as a pure master of fantasy, delving into all sorts of political intrigues and fights for power in medieval-ish Westeros.
The author’s literary legacy, however, goes way beyond epic historical stories like A Song of Ice and Fire or Fire & Blood, which is what Martin’s other novels and their already existing or potential adaptations prove.
Despite In the Lost Lands, the most recent movie version of the writer’s short story of the same name, bombing in theatres, Martin seems to be moving forward with some thoughts on his most favorite novel’s potential adaptation.
George Martin Wants to Adapt Fevre Dream Next
You might have thought A Song of Ice and Fire was Martin’s darling all this time, but the author’s personal favorite doesn’t have anything to do with epic fights or fire-spitting dragons.
In a recent interview with Collider, Martin revealed he would love to see his 1982 vampire novel being brought to the screens, calling it his “favorite child” that was definitely one of his best works, at least until Game of Thrones came around.
Additionally, the writer stated that he wasn’t the only one interested in pushing a potential adaptation towards its production.
“If it is made, I don't want to hire some other writer to have his version. I want my version. I want to get a director on it who loves the material and would be a great director. We've had interest from at least three fairly major directors, two of whom I love. They’re great, great directors, and it would be amazing to work with them”, Martin added.
Meanwhile, In the Lost Lands Proves George Martin’s Point About Scriptwriting
With all the issues Game of Thrones had back in the day and In the Lost Lands is experiencing right now, it might indeed make sense for Martin to helm future adaptation as their writer, despite this potentially becoming a distraction from his ongoing battle with The Winds of Winter.
Directed by Paul W. S. Anderson with a screenplay by Constantin Werner, In the Lost Lands starring Milla Jovovich and Dave Bautista has so far grossed less than $3 million worldwide with its initial budget of $55 million, also becoming a disappointment for critics who gave it 22% of positive reviews.
Alternatively, Game of Thrones has repeatedly failed Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire throughout years; the only 4 episodes written by Martin for the show remain its best instalments out of all 8 seasons.
