Who dies in Four Hands Two Sonatas? The gunshot is in episode 1 — the victim, and who fired, take the rest of the drama
tvN's music drama opens with a shooting and then spends most of its run refusing to settle what it cost. Eight episodes in, the answer to "who dies" is not the one the cold open sells.
The prologue is set in Prague in 2017, at the International Harmonie Competition. Two things run in parallel. On stage, Kang Pi-o (Song Kang) plays through a competition final with an injured finger, blood reaching the keys. Elsewhere, Choi Jeong-yo (Lee Jun-young) is in a car with men who took him, fights back, and a gun goes off inside the vehicle. He's hit. He goes into the water. Then the drama jumps back six months and starts over with two high school students who haven't met yet.
The victim, as the story files it
For the next four episodes the shooting hasn't happened yet, and episode 5 plays it in full. Pi-o, recovering from pneumonia, enters the Harmonie and pushes Jeong-yo to compete seriously. His competition score goes missing — he blames a pianist named Tom, then finds that a competitor named Anna took it. Jeong-yo hands over his own copy, marked up with his notes, so Pi-o can go on. Pi-o wins. Jeong-yo is taken outside, shot during the escape attempt, and lost in the lake.
The classical music world files him as dead and keeps that file closed for nine years.
Nobody confirmed dies
Episode 6 jumps forward. Pi-o is a touring name and privately not functioning; he has run a private investigation for five of those years. What he learns is that Jeong-yo survived the shooting with nerve damage to his right hand, which ended any possibility of a piano career. Jeong-yo resurfaces at a conducting competition under the name Luca Domenico, greets Pi-o in English, and acts as though he can't place him.
Episode 7 establishes that the amnesia is a performance. He has been running it since the reunion.
So as of 23 September 2026, with eight of twelve episodes aired, the drama has not confirmed a single death among its principals. What the gunshot killed was a career, an identity, and nine years.
Who fired, and who paid
The men in the car were hired. The show has not named who hired them, and the suspects it keeps in frame are all on Pi-o's side of the family:
- Kang Ji-hye (Yoon Se-ah) — Pi-o's mother, a former ballerina raising him alone, and the person Jeong-yo deliberately maneuvers himself next to in episode 8.
- Kang Seung-woon (Jung Jin-young) — Pi-o's grandfather, a conductor with a documented contempt for both his daughter and her son, and a reputation to protect.
- Director Kim — the loan shark working Jeong-yo's neighborhood before Prague, and the one non-Kang party with a motive.
Episode 8 complicates the revenge reading. Jeong-yo talks Pi-o through his performance anxiety, mirroring what Pi-o did for him nine years earlier, and Leisurebyte's 2026 review noted that his behavior points away from Pi-o as the target.
What's left
Episodes 9 and 10 air 26 and 27 September; 11 and 12 close the run on 3 and 4 October. The drama has four hours to name a paymaster and decide whether the prologue's body count stays at zero.
For the record: the Korean title is 포핸즈 — "Four Hands" — the term for two pianists sharing one keyboard. The English title adds a second sonata, and the series has spent eight episodes keeping the two players on opposite sides of a lake.
