Seong Eun's My Oppa Is an Idol ran on Naver Webtoon from September 2017 to February 21, 2020: 128 chapters, 660 million global views, and an ending that does not land where the fangirl fantasy wants it to.
How the webtoon plays it
- Da-reum actually dates Chan first. The fan gets the idol. Briefly.
- Actress Yoon Cho-i schemes. Chan is publicly announced as dating her, and Da-reum gets branded a sasaeng, the obsessive-stalker fan tag that ends careers and friendships.
- At Cho-i's suggestion, Da-reum breaks up with Chan. The rumors clear. She is wrecked.
- She turns down Ha-gi's confession, then, slowly, falls for him.
- They date. They marry. The CEO wins.
The webtoon lets the fangirl have her idol just long enough to learn why you shouldn't.
The casting tell
If you want to know whether tvN is keeping the plot, look at who they hired. ITZY's Yuna plays Yoon Cho-i, the actress whose scheme detonates the first couple. You don't cast an idol as the woman who blows up the romance if you're cutting the explosion. Her character brief already has her falling for Chan on the set of their fictional drama. That's a fuse, not a subplot.
Where the show is
Mid-run, Mondays and Tuesdays on tvN, with the slot changing hands September 14. Kim Hye-jun has said this is her first rom-com and that she worried about balancing chemistry with two leading men before finding out she had no reason to, which is a very diplomatic way of not picking a side. Cha Woo-min, meanwhile, spent months in dance lessons to pass as a real idol, and his co-stars turned up on their day off to watch him shoot D.N.X's music video.
Team Ha-gi has the receipts. Team Chan has the choreography. The webtoon has already called it.
