Who Is Bloater in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2, Explained

The Last of Us’ new episode has reintroduced a terrifying type of walking zombie, and he may only be the first one of many more to haunt Jackson in the second season. Here’s everything you need to know about The Last of Us’ most dangerous infected monster.
It’s been a tough hour for those keeping up with The Last of Us and witnessing all the shocking plot twists that had to come in the latest episode.
Apart from Joel’s encounter with Abby which many may guess didn’t end well, the show also put some pressure on the entire town of Jackson, seeing an army of the infected attacking the citizens from out of nowhere.
Even though it’s not a rare thing in The Last of Us’ universe, the fight came as an essential event, bringing to the screen another type of the infected and possibly hinting at what might await those people in Jackson even after beating those monsters up for now.
In fact, there’s been a whole classification of the infected you might not have seen much difference among, but the latest episode proves you better know what they’re capable of, so here you go.
Who Are Bloaters in The Last of Us
In the second season’s episode 2, Tommy barely escapes the death from a Bloater who is presumably a leader of the whole group of zombies attacking Jackson.
This one doesn’t even remotely look like a person, due to the fact that they’ve been infected for more than a year and the Cordyceps fungus has gained control over the entire body. In its turn, the body has formed some sort of an armor no one can destroy with just a gunshot.
On top of that, the only possible way to bring the Bloater down is intense fire, which is proved right when Tommy can’t kill the infected with his fire gun.
As a whole, the Bloaters are considered the most dangerous type of zombies in The Last of Us, though they’re way slower than others and don’t really have any kind of senses due to the intense fungal growth.
What Other Types of the Infected Are There in The Last of Us
There’s a couple more types of zombies which are a much more frequent, but still not less dangerous phenomenon in the Last of Us.
First, there are Runners, which is the first stage of the Cordyceps fungus infection showing itself in those who have been infected for a couple of days; they still mostly look like people, but the infection has already reached their brain and there is fungal growth on their skin.
Next come Stalkers, those who you might recognize in the series by the croaking sounds they’re known for; these have been infected for 2 weeks or more, having fungal growth all over the body that doesn’t have human features anymore.
Finally, there are Clickers called after the clicking sound they make to echolocate their next victim; these are considered the most aggressive and fierce ones.
When Is The Last of Us Next Episode Coming?
The second season’s third episode will be released on Max on April 27. The remaining four episodes will arrive on the platform one by one every Sunday.
