Who is Harwood in Silo? Billings put Orla Kent's murder to him face to face
Ed Harwood, played by Ned Dennehy, runs Construction in Silo 18 and, it turns out, an entire concealed logistics operation beneath it. For most of season 3 he's the man Sheriff Paul Billings (Chinaza Uche) cannot pin anything on — seven previous investigations, seven dead ends.
He is not, in the end, Orla Kent's killer. He is the reason she was killed.
Who's who in the case
- Orla Kent — Supply's shadow, investigating inventory disappearing from Critical Supply. She told her sister she'd found something new, then vanished.
- Glenda Harwood — Ed's daughter. She lost the Supply shadow job to Orla and had previously dated Orla's boyfriend, which made her the obvious suspect for most of the season.
- Mike Davidson — Orla's boyfriend, Glenda's ex, and the answer.
- Ed Harwood — Glenda's father, controller of the hidden lift, and the man who arranged for Knox's father to disappear.
How the case got to him
Orla's body turned up in the mines in episode 3, "A Dark Web", recovered during the evacuation after Camille Sims released poison gas to stop Lukas Kyle contacting another silo. The autopsy ruled out the gas. Someone had killed her and put her there.
Billings finally confronted Harwood directly in episode 7, "Radio", pressing him on how a body was moved through Silo 18 without a single camera catching it. Harwood is superb value in the scene — bitter, sarcastic, ranting about Judicial sending people down the mines over ideas, citing a magician banished for a theoretical relic, telling Paul he respected Sheriff Holston because Holston at least considered what a mine sentence does to a family, and needling him about all those investigations that went nowhere.
He admitted one thing: he'd argued with Orla the day before she died, furious that Glenda had been passed over in her favour. Then he told Billings to come back with evidence.
What broke it open
The evidence arrived in episode 8, "Gray Goo", from Gus — Knox's supposedly dead father. Using Gus's recreated design for the hidden lift, Billings, Knox, and Hank found Harwood, and Harwood named Mike Davidson. Orla had walked in on the stash. Davidson killed her for it and moved her body through the concealed route.
Harwood's own defence is that the hoarding started during the rebellion, to stop residents stripping Critical Supply of things that cannot be replaced. Whether that reads as civic-minded or self-serving depends on how you feel about a man who also faked a colleague's death.
The loose end nobody addressed
Silo 18 is down to roughly two years of light bulbs, and the destination of the missing bulbs and the Day One computers is not accounted for by a stash in a tunnel. Several critics have noted that a murder mystery built up across eight episodes resolved into a fairly ordinary crime of convenience, with the bigger conspiracy it seemed to promise never arriving.
Mike Davidson was arrested. That was that.
