Who is Lady Gayou in Though I Am an Inept Villainess?
She arrives with a clan name, a senior rank and a deal for a servant who hasn't eaten properly in days. It takes the maiden court five episodes to ask the one question that matters about her.
Gayou — Kin Gayou in full, written 金雅容 — presents herself as a high-ranking court lady of the Kin clan, one of the five noble houses whose daughters compete in the Hinamiya maiden court. She has no scenes of her own agenda, no clan business, no mistress in frame. What she has is access: she turns up where Leelee, Shu Keigetsu's put-upon court lady, happens to be, and she turns up with food.
What she actually does
Gayou's entire function in the story is running someone else's servant. Working through Leelee, she manufactures the harassment campaign aimed at the woman living in Keigetsu's body — who is, after the Double Sevens body swap, actually Kou Reirin.
- The bribe — Gayou offers Leelee food and favor in exchange for mistreating her mistress and reporting back on everything she does.
- The escalation — she orders Leelee to kill "Keigetsu," and threatens to have her accused of theft if she refuses.
- The attempt — in episode 3, Leelee goes through with it and is stopped by Shin-u, captain of the Eagle Eyes. Reirin defends her rather than turning her in, which is how the whole scheme starts unravelling.
- The cover — every thread points back at the Kin clan, and specifically at Kin Seika, the Kin maiden already running her own harassment operation against "Keigetsu."
That last part is the trick. Seika is a genuine antagonist with a genuine motive, which makes her a convenient place to hang someone else's crimes.
The episode 5 question
Episode 5, "Who Is That Girl?", aired 9 August 2026. At the Ghost Festival, Reirin performs a Sogdian Whirl and then presses Seika directly about the theft accusation hanging over Leelee. Seika's answer is that she has no court lady named Gayou. Nobody in the Kin household does.
By episode 8, "Like a Villainess, Like a Villainess" (30 August 2026), the show states it plainly: Gayou is a person who does not exist. Reirin works out that someone borrowed a Kin-clan name to move through the maiden court unchallenged, and Keigetsu names her.
Who was wearing the name
Gayou is Shu Gabi — 朱雅媚 — the Noble Consort, in disguise. The two names share the character 雅, which is about as much of a clue as she bothered to hide.
"She disguised herself as a court lady named Kin Gayou... she approached Leelee with a deal and gave the instruction to torment Keigetsu," the Japanese entertainment site ciatr wrote in its 2026 breakdown of the character.
Gabi's history explains the rest. She was once the emperor's favorite, known in the maiden court as the Crown Prince's hibiscus, and she was close with Kou Kenshuu before Kenshuu bore the heir and became empress while Gabi lost her own child. She took in Shu Keigetsu, an orphan of her own clan, and spent years feeding the girl's envy of Reirin until Keigetsu reached for the body-swap spell on her own. Gabi's real target was never either maiden — it was Kenshuu, through venomcraft, with the two girls positioned to die in the crossfire and the Kin clan positioned to take the blame.
What ruins it is entirely accidental: Reirin's compulsive hygiene routine and her habit of shooting arrows through the night keep breaking the curse's hold on her.
Ai Kayano voices Shu Gabi in Japanese, with Grace Lu in the English dub — casting that makes rather more sense after episode 8 than before it.
Episode 10 confirms Gabi's guilt, the two maidens turn the curse back on her with a centipede Reirin caught earlier, and she ends the arc exposed and exiled, with a reconciliation with the empress on the way out.
The anime is a Doga Kobo production directed by Mitsue Yamazaki, adapting Satsuki Nakamura's light novels, which Ichijinsha has published since December 2020 and Seven Seas releases in English. It ran 12 episodes on TV Tokyo from 12 July 2026, with the finale on 27 September.
