Who Is Lady Sarah? After Episode 6, Everyone’s Officially Least Favorite Character in ‘The Gilded Age’

The Gilded Age’s latest episode has seen a major turn in Bertha Russell and Lady Sarah’s relationship, potentially leading to another character’s rise that fans have wanted all along.
It’s all about money and status in HBO’s The Gilded Age, but for Carrie Coon’s Bertha Russell even her slightly inferior position isn’t a reason to be treated with less dignity.
The character seemingly won the audiences’ trust back after putting it in danger several episodes ago during her daughter Gladys’ controversial wedding.
In the ongoing third season’s episode 6 released last Sunday, Bertha is seen visiting newlyweds in England, also encountering Lady Sarah Vere in the family estate.
Despite still striving for respect and a better position in the high society, Bertha doesn’t let anything hold her back when a confrontation comes — and it might also be a sort of turning point for her daughter too.
Who Is Lady Sarah Vere?
Portrayed by Hattie Morahan, Lady Sarah Vere is an English aristocrat and the sister of the Duke of Buckingham, Gladys’ husband.
There’s not so much to know about her background, but it’s clear that Lady Sarah has been pretty abusive towards her younger brother all along, now seeing Gladys as her potential new victim who she can train like a puppy.
Her plan is thwarted by Bertha’s arrival in England where she hopes to lift her homesick daughter’s spirits, and she eventually does so.
During the scene depicting a family dinner, the conversation just can’t get past political issues, eventually turning to the Third Reform Act, which also is followed by a heated discussion about women’s rights to vote.
As Bertha makes it clear that her position is pro-feminist, Lady Sarah is, well, too stunned to speak, which helps the former back her opponent into a corner.
Conveniently enough, this also helps Gladys see that she might not be trapped forever after all.
Bertha and Lady Sarah Dynamics Shows Way for Freedom for Gladys
Despite not being close to her mother and distancing from her even more after a forced marriage, Gladys still gets a chance to see that, even in a golden cage like this, she can find a way to play by her own rules and not to succumb to her sister-in-law’s manipulative schemes.
“All Gladys has wanted is freedom. And in that time period, you get freedom as a young woman through marrying a man. Even though she’s had to be forced into this marriage, she’s finally starting to see… ‘Wait, maybe I can start playing the game of chess and manipulate it to work for me’”, Gladys’ actress Taissa Farmiga recently said in an interview with Decider.
When Will ‘The Gilded Age’ Next Episode Be Released?
The show’s season 3 episode 7 will arrive on HBO Max on August 3.
