Who Is Maysilee Donner in Sunrise on the Reaping, Explained

The Hunger Games’ next prequel movie has just found its actress for another key character in Suzanne Collins’ novel, so you might want to know more about her part in Sunrise on the Reaping.
Things are moving rapidly for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping which has just got Mckenna Grace to portray Maysilee Donner in the upcoming movie adaptation.
The Handmaid’s Tale and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’s actress has joined the already announced cast of Joseph Zada and Whitney Peak, set to play young Haymitch Abernathy and his girlfriend Lenore Dove Baird respectively.
Appearing as a little less significant figure compared to Haymitch, Grace’s Maysilee will still play an essential role in the 50th Hunger Games’ outcome and will even be connected to the original story — here’s how.
Maysilee Donner’s Backstory, Explained
Alongside Haymitch, Maysilee becomes one of the four tributes from District 12 to participate in the 50th Hunger Games, aka the third Quarter Quell.
Before the reaping, she lived with her parents and twin sister Merrilee above a sweet shop their family owned and wanted both girls to inherit.
In the district, Maysilee was mostly known for bullying other children, including Haymitch who she called “itchy itchy Haymitchy” when the latter struggled with chiggers. However, they started getting along soon after leaving for the Hunger Games when Haymitch saw Maysilee’s profound vision of everyone’s vices and her bold attitude towards Panem’s henchmen.
Additionally, Maysilee is also the original owner of the mockingjay pin which, in the flagship movie series given to Katniss Everdeen, later on becomes the symbol of the biggest rebellion against Panem.
What Happens to Maysilee in the Hunger Games? (Spoiler Alert!)
Having received a score of 6 during her private session with Gamemakers, Maysilee was believed to have solid chances to at least become one of the last survivors of the 50th Hunger Games.
Once in the arena, she escapes from Cornucopia with some guns and food, eventually managing to make her provisions last and even killing two more tributes; later, she makes an alliance with Haymitch, but breaks it when they become two out of five remaining tributes, explaining it by her unwillingness to kill him.
However, Maysilee dies moments after leaving Haymitch during a fierce attack by a flock of candy-pink birds that thrust their sharp beaks into her neck. The birds were programmed to target specifically Maysilee and never touched Haymitch who remained with her until she died.
