Who is Player X in Liar Game? The manga settled it back in the 2000s — the anime is only now catching up
Liar Game's anime is retracing the manga's most paranoid arc, and the Player X question is back. Where the mystery started and where the answer has been hiding.
Twenty years. That's how long the answer to "who is Player X" has been sitting in print, fully available, while a brand-new audience currently loses its mind over a mystery that was solved when flip phones were aspirational.
Quick recap for the new arrivals: Madhouse's Liar Game anime is working through the early rounds of Shinobu Kaitani's manga, which ran in Weekly Young Jump from 2005 to 2015. In Round 2 — the gloriously paranoid Minority Rule game — someone posing as a Liar Game attendant scams poor Michiko Takada out of 100 million yen. That someone gets dubbed Mr. X, and the hunt for him poisons every alliance in the building. Delicious.
The red herring, beloved
The manga (and now the anime) points a big flashing arrow at Player No. 15, a "young guy" who fits the description Takada gives. Nao spends an embarrassing amount of energy spying on him. He is, and I cannot stress this enough, completely innocent. A random man. Minding his business. Getting surveilled.
The actual answer (spoiler, obviously)
It's Fukunaga. Fukunaga Yuji, the shrieking, money-obsessed chaos agent who becomes one of the series' best characters precisely because they open as a thief and a fraud. The manga dropped this reveal back in the mid-2000s, meaning:
- Manga readers have known for two decades
- Drama watchers got their version in 2007
- Anime-onlies are the last people at the party, and the party is a hostage situation
Kaitani himself, announcing the adaptation, put it best:
"The theme of my series is more relevant than ever."
