Not everyone was happy with Tracy’s character arc. Some felt she was a bit too perfect, the ultimate dream girl created just to check all of Ted's boxes and then to be destroyed by the writing.

Spoiler alert: for those who missed it in the finale, Tracy falls ill and dies in 2024, six years before Ted begins telling the story. Then all of the sudden, his kids encourage him to call Robin and ask her out.

The finale felt lackluster to many because it totally changed the whole idea of the show. It was supposed to be about a man who loves his wife so much he tells his kids about how they’ve met. Instead it became a completely different thing.
“I honestly think they could have pulled it off if they didn't try to force it into a single 40 minute episode after a full season of filler. Like if they paced out the twists and reveals from the finale across the last season I'd be okay with it I think,” one Redditor said.
“That ending was the worst conclusion to any story of any medium I have ever seen. It has ruined the show for me. I will never watch another episode nor recommend it to anyone. I loved it until the end but the writing fell off a cliff,” another fan, Ryoisee on Reddit pointed out.
