Arakawa loves a bait-and-switch, and Daemons of the Shadow Realm opens with an all-timer: the first "villain" you meet is the hero's own sister. Or someone wearing her face. Or the other one wearing her face. Keep up.
The fake-out phase
Episode-one Asa rolls into Higashi Village with an armed unit and a body count, which is classic villain behavior right up until you learn:
- The girl in the cage Yuru grew up protecting? Not his sister. A decoy.
- The "attacker"? The real Asa, back for her brother, with zero chill and a lot of firepower.
- Her vibe is terrifying, but her cause is family. Scary ≠ evil, a distinction this show weaponizes constantly.
So the two Asas cancel each other out as villain candidates, and the story finally shows you where the rot actually is.
The actual answer: follow the smilers
The closest thing this morally gray swamp has to capital-V villains is the duo of Hayato Shingo and his blade-for-hire Ivan Yosano — the man with two sword daemons and a hobby of using civilians as shields. In a show where nearly everyone operates in gray, one reviewer notes, Ivan stands out as about as unambiguously evil as it gets.
Even the cast clocked the shift in temperature. Kensho Ono (Yuru) singled out the daemon pair Long-Arm and Long-Leg as the moment the series showed its teeth, telling io9: "I didn't think that something pure evil could exist" — until them.
This is a story where the first monster you meet is a lie, and the real one shows up later, smiling, with excellent posture.
And looming behind Shingo and Ivan, the manga keeps gesturing at something bigger in the shadows. Because of course it does. It's Arakawa. The villain org chart always has one more floor.
