Who killed Barry in The Oval? Everything about Barry Hallsen's fate on Tyler Perry's BET drama — the suspects, the body mix-ups, and where the mystery finally landed.
Barry Hallsen had exactly one goal on The Oval, and it was a good one: get his kidnapped daughter back. Everything else — the arrests, the accidental shootings, the drug side hustle he absolutely was not going to discuss — was just stuff that happened on the way. Tyler Perry's White House could survive assassins, coups, and a First Son with a body count. What it could not do was follow Barry into a sex cult compound in the Virginia woods.
A man, a plan, a cult
Quick refresher on how the butler's son ended up here:
- Callie, Barry's little girl, gets snatched in the very first episode by her mother Ruth and her Rakudushi cult friends;
- Barry spends the next several seasons losing his job, his temper, and occasionally his grip on legality trying to find her;
- eventually he stops waiting for the FBI and goes after the compound himself.
That last decision is the one that killed him. The cult got to Barry, and BET's own account announced it with the delicacy of a foghorn: "Wait…The Rakadushi's killed Barry!"
The fakeout era
Except this is The Oval, so being dead was more of a suggestion. Kareem found a body in his apartment. Kareem's poor friend buried a body. Richard identified a body at the morgue that turned out to be Not Barry, because the Rakudushis apparently keep a supply of decoy corpses like the rest of us keep AA batteries. For a full season the show gaslit an entire family — and audience — about whether this man was actually gone.
He was. Barry's death was finally confirmed for good in season five, closing the book on the search that consumed him.
"After 3 crazy, fun seasons, Barry has met his 'end'," Vaughn W. Hebron wrote in his farewell to fans, quotation marks his — because even the actor knew better than to trust a death on this show.
So: who killed Barry? The Rakudushis did, while he was doing the only genuinely heroic thing anyone on this series ever attempted. The White House chewed through presidents, chiefs of staff, and at least one wig budget. Barry just wanted his kid. Pour one out.
