Black Doves kills Helen Webb's lover in its first hour. The show spends five more answering the question she can't ask anyone out loud: who wanted a civil servant dead?

Netflix released all six episodes of Black Doves on December 5, 2024. Joe Barton created and wrote it, with Keira Knightley as Helen Webb, a spy for a secretive organization called the Black Doves who is married to Defence Secretary Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan). The man she's actually in love with, civil servant Jason Davies (Andrew Koji), is murdered along with two strangers, per Wikipedia's episode summaries.

Sam (Ben Whishaw), a hitman who has been away for seven years, comes back to London to keep her alive, while her handler Reed (Sarah Lancashire) decides how much Helen is allowed to know. The story Helen digs up from there runs all the way up to Downing Street.

Spoilers for all of season 1 from here on.

Who killed Jason

The trigger was pulled by Elmore Fitch, a sniper. The man who hired him was Trent Clark (Angus Cooper), son of London crime matriarch Alex Clark (Tracey Ullman), per Sportskeeda. The same order covered the other two victims that night, a tabloid reporter named Phillip and a woman named Maggie.

None of the three died over Helen. They died over a recording.

How the ambassador really died

The deaths connect back to Jun Chen, the Chinese ambassador, whose death was already in the news when the series opens:

  • The accident: Trent was dating Chen's daughter, Kai-Ming, and supplying her with heroin. When Chen confronted him about the drugs, Trent pushed him, and Chen hit his head on a table and died, per Den of Geek.
  • The cover-up: Episode 5's recording shows Trent killing Chen by accident, and Prime Minister Richard Eaves covering it up. Police Commissioner Stephen Yarrick (Sam Troughton) is part of the effort to keep it buried.
  • The decoy: Along the way, Wallace hears that the Americans may have killed Chen with British support, a theory that sends everyone looking in the wrong direction.

Jason, Maggie and Phillip were connected to the recording and in a position to expose it. Trent had them killed before they could.

Who Jason really was

The finale reveals the other cover story. Jason was an MI5 agent sent to find out whether Helen was leaking government secrets. He found out she was, and his final report cleared her anyway.

"He does it because he loves [Helen] and because he owes her."

— Joe Barton, creator, on Sam killing the Clarks, to Netflix Tudum

That's how the Clarks end. Helen confronts Alex with a gun on Trent, and Sam fires first, killing them both. Yarrick is captured and killed too. Reed hands Helen a hard drive with the truth about Jason, and she throws it into the Thames rather than spoil her memories of him.

Jason lied to MI5 to protect Helen, and Helen threw away the proof of who he was to protect her memory of him. Both of them chose the cover story.

Season 2

Netflix drops season 2 in full on November 5, 2026, per What's on Netflix. Wallace is on track to become prime minister, the nanny looks like Reed's plant in the Webb household, and Sam has a warning from an unknown caller that he will be held accountable. Neve Campbell, Ambika Mod, Babou Ceesay and Sam Riley join the cast.

Season 1 began with a murder that led to a prime minister's cover-up. Season 2 moves Helen into the prime minister's house.
